I was watching a show the other day, and Gilles Bensimon (Elle Photographer), was using what appeared to be a huge ringlight for his photography. Is anyone familiar with this type of flash. When I look on the web I see the regular ring lights that are better suited for macro, but never this monster ringlight I saw on the television.
Thanks!

Used the Profoto Acute2 this weekend. It's awesome, but the system isn't cheap. Here's a couple shots with it..

Pardon my inquiry, but what is so special about a large light source centered about the lens?...there is no modelling of the features of the subject, so you end up with a somewhat featureless face. Admittedly I can see the attraction for fashion photographers, "Popular with fashion photographers for freely positioned, direct, and detailed light without harshness" as the website for Prophoto states...since the model is a mannequin that moves down the runway and is not supposed to herself be distracting the viewer from the clothes.

A couple things.. the ring of shadow around the subject makes her pop out from the background. It's just a cool look, and not as easily attainable any other way.

Also, you can get a great quality of light in cramped surroundings where you can't get a lightbank positioned correctly. Here's one from Sunday in a narrow stairwell..

Your negative of the lack of modeling shadows can in some instances be the desired aesthetic.

Plus it looks cool strapped on to your camera :)

Not that I've seen. As far as I can tell the Acute2 is the least expensive one of any real quality or power.

you can build your own.

The purpose of the light is to give that black halo around the subject. which only works when the model is against the wall or a solid background.

The ring light is also one way lots of photogs use to get that "glamour" or direct-on key lighting effect. Some also like its use for the distinctive circular catch light you get with it.

C&C always appreciated for my posts :)

Would you mind sharing what that is and how you use it? (Maybe in a PM if we're getting off topic)
