This is kind of a draft. I am going to try again tomorrow, but would appreciate any ideas to improve it. Lens is 35 L II but is not a choice yet on metadata registry. I used fill flash via extension card but it appears I need to turn it down a bit.
Thx!

i'd gel with CTO to match the ambient. maybe pull the flash off to either side.

I agree, bounce it off a wall to give it a little directional flash. Flag the side of your flash closest to the subject to avoid any light spill (unless it looks ok to you without the flag).

It looks pretty good regardless...

It looks pretty good to me, but I'd warm up the WB a little bit.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Heya,

Do you have any modifiers? Umbrella? Softbox? And a CTO gel of differing values? If you do, I'd use that. Largest modifier you can find, and get it as close as you can out of the frame to subject. Gel can be a 1/4th or 1/2 CTO and work fine here with your ambient temp.

If you do not have those things, get them.

If you do not want to get them, bounce the flash off a large wall and drop the flash exposure a bit so it's fill, as you have it now, it's acting as key and making harsh shadows and is of course a much cooler temp than ambient.

Maybe pull the chair forward a few more feet to get more isolation to get nicer, bigger bokeh balls on that tree?

Very best,

Thx for detailed reply MalVeauX! I really do need an umbrella or two as well as some gel modifiers. Really didnt know how bad I needed them until I tried this shot with mostly ambient lighting...

I think it is pretty good. The OOF arm/hand kind of strikes me as a bit off though.

I agree. I could not find gels locally and was under time pressure to get cards out. I used less fill flash and warmed up the color temp in this shot and used it.

I like this one tons better. Nice composition, pose and context. Technically much better than the first offering too.
