Looking to do some serious upgrading or look into a different direction. I've never had a 1D Body and now that my budget can afford one of the following combo's listed above, I need to make a decision. A little history, I've owned a 70D, 6D, and a 7D Mark II. I loved the 7D Mark II and 6D but always wished the 7D had the 6D ISO performance and the 6D have the AF of the 7D. This is where the 1D Mark IV fits in between the 6D & 7D Mark II. My dream camera has always been the 1DX however since it came out but never had the budget to afford one until now. My favorite lens is the 300mm f4L IS USM but would love to get my hands on the f2.8 IS Version 1 but I simply cannot afford to to have the best of both worlds right now. I shoot everything but mainly shoot Wildlife to which believe it or not, Here in South Florida. 300mm is perfectly fine even on Full Frame. It's looks like i'm going to go with the 1DX combo but would like to hear some opinions. Thanks :-)

IMO the 300/2.8 IS is such an awesome lens that I'd happily "settle" for a 1D4 over a 1DX and the 300/4 IS. From all reports you'd be blown away by the 2.8 IS in comparison to the f/4 IS. Then again, if 300mm on FF is the FOV you need, 300mm on APS-H is going to be too narrow.

The 1DX would probably make up for the loss of aperture through its improved sensor and its AF is supposed to be a step or two above the 1D4 too. On the flip side the 300/4 IS is not reputed for the fastest AF motor.

If I were making the choice, I'd take the 1DIV and 300mm f/2.8. The 1.3x crop factor will put more pixels on target.

I would love to try out a 1D Mark IV but having a real pain finding a decent used body not just on here but everywhere.

Looks good to me. I think a tad overpriced, but low shutter count, for a 1DIV.

Not mine, BTW.

Sorry that you missed ID4. I work with both mentioned bodies and the 1DX is better at high ISO but 2.8 glass is the way to go if you have the budget (I know that you said that you don't) IMHO light is pretty decent for most of the nature shots so maybe the f4 version will work. Only you know the answer:) The 1D4 is no ISO slouch.

I have the 1DX and love it. Having said that, I would jump on the 1D Mark IV with the 300mm f/2.8. As much as I enjoy the body, I'm a believer that the lens is where you should focus, and it doesn't get much better than that one!

Heya,

I commonly shoot wildlife/birds here in central Florida on 200~400mm on a 1D2. You can totally get close enough for most things. Recently I've been shooting 280mm F4 (200F2.8L + 1.4x TC) on my 1D2 and I really enjoy this focal length on the 1.3x crop and the speed of F4. If I had to choose what I wanted for handheld BIF and close range wildlife, I'd want the 400mm F4 DO. But, I don't want that cost. In your situation, you seem to be doing similar stuff. If I had to choose between a 1D4 & 300 F2.8L or a 1DX with 300 F4L, I'd get the 1D4 with 300 F2.8L in a heart beat. I wouldn't even consider the 1DX frankly. I know that sounds crazy, but are you going to be shooting at ISO 6400? ISO 12,800? If not, you really just do not need the 1DX. The 1D4 can get clean 1600~3200 ISO shots just fine. I would consider that. Lastly, between the lenses, no contest, given the option between a 300 F2.8 super telephoto and a 300 F4L telephoto, I'd take the 300 F2.8 super every single time. Every time. Why? Speed matters. There's that ISO savings. Also, this thing can take a TC and become a 420 F4 or 600 F5.6. The 300 F4L cannot do that. Sure, you could go to 420 F5.6 and 600 F8, and be restricted to F8, but why would you want that when you can have F5.6? Right? Seems like a no brainer to me. I'd do 1D4 & 300 F2.8L. That glass is awesome. It's far more important for wildlife photography than a 1DX is any day.

Very best,

Keep the 7d2 and spend your money on glass... 300 or 400 f2.8... or 500 f4 depending on what you want to shoot. I've been reading around about the 1d4 and 7d2 and there does not appear to be a strong consensus that one is superior to the other in terms of usability and IQ. they're both great cameras though.

I own the 1D Mark IV With 300mm f2.8 IS V1 combo, if I had the opportunity to swap with the 1DX with 300mm f4L I would turn it down.
The 1d4 is a wonderful body and I would have to agree with rdricks above with regards to the lens.

i haven't used either, but the way i see it, given a limited budget, i'd get the older body with nicer lens. that's because it's more likely you will be keeping the lens, but someday you'd probably trade the body up. the lens depreciates far less, and especially since it's a v1 so it probably won't depreciate much at all if any. however, if you get a 1dx, the prices will keep along with a half-life curve (as noted by another member) and will drop even further when the 1dx m2 comes out.

so anyway i say get the 2.8 and keep it, and upgrade the camera when you see fit.
