I have never used 1DX or 300 2.8. I do own 1D4 and 300 F4 IS. Assuming you can find a 1D4 and also assuming weight of 300 2.8 is not a problem, I would not even be considering 1DX and f4. 300 F4 IS is a good lens but 300 2.8 is regarded as one of the best. Portability is the only thing going for the f4 option.

I'm going with the 1D IV combo, coming from a 6D / 7D Mark ii, would like to know if the 1D is 1 stop better in ISO versus the 7D Mark ii as people claim.

I think your making the right choice.
Id throw in a 1.4x and 2X t-Con when you can, the 300mm f/2.8 will work wonders with both!

+1

The 1D4 with the 300 2.8 by itself or any of the of the converters us a very effective combination, with the 1.4x being my favourite combo.

A coupla bodies and a few lenses

I own the 1D Mark IV With 300mm f2.8 IS V1 combo, if I had the opportunity to swap with the 1DX with 300mm f4L I would turn it down.
The 1d4 is a wonderful body and I would have to agree with rdricks above with regards to the lens.

+1 I have the same combo and it's pretty awesome. That being said, the guy who invites me along to AHL hockey games has a 1DX and 300 2.8 Mk II. VERY nice pics.

I would love to try out a 1D Mark IV but having a real pain finding a decent used body not just on here but everywhere.

Keep looking. Every day. I scored a 1D IV with 18K clicks!!!

FOR

$1400!!!

Here's the thread

You'll find one for a good price. Be patient, keep looking and pull the trigger as soon as you find one.

Looking to do some serious upgrading or look into a different direction. I've never had a 1D Body and now that my budget can afford one of the following combo's listed above, I need to make a decision. A little history, I've owned a 70D, 6D, and a 7D Mark II. I loved the 7D Mark II and 6D but always wished the 7D had the 6D ISO performance and the 6D have the AF of the 7D. This is where the 1D Mark IV fits in between the 6D & 7D Mark II. My dream camera has always been the 1DX however since it came out but never had the budget to afford one until now. My favorite lens is the 300mm f4L IS USM but would love to get my hands on the f2.8 IS Version 1 but I simply cannot afford to to have the best of both worlds right now. I shoot everything but mainly shoot Wildlife to which believe it or not, Here in South Florida. 300mm is perfectly fine even on Full Frame. It's looks like i'm going to go with the 1DX combo but would like to hear some opinions. Thanks :-)

I own both the 7D2 and 1DX (used to own the 1D4) and also own the Canon 300 F2.8 L IS (used to own the 300 F4 L IS as well). Personally, much as I love my 1DX (it really is something else), it can do no better than your glass will allow. Whilst I rate the 300 F4 L IS highly the F2.8 is simply better for wildlife (except insects) additionally it works very well with extenders too. Add to this the stunning AF and the extra stop of light (this will help with low light performance) then I would suggest you go for the lens first - well I did!
The 1DX will only get cheaper, good glass keeps it's value much better and is a longer term investment.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

I own this combo and it is fabulous! I absolutely love my 1D4 and the 300mm f/2.8 IS is a joy to shoot with and without both TC's.
