So.... I have an SL1 and a 70D. I have had them both for a little under 1 year and bought them both NEW. I use a canon eyepiece extender on the 70D. The eyecup on the 70d kept sliding off of the extender. I thought maybe it was a bad fitment between the extender and the eyecup - even though they are both made by Canon and made to fit together. THEN, my eyecup on my SL1 started slipping off randomly. I never even took that one off. I never really bump it either. It was just loose. Now it is lost and I need to order a new one for my SL1. The eyecup on the 70D is also loose. The extender is pretty snug and doesn't move unless I make it move.

WTF...

Does anyone know of any alternatives? Other brands maybe? Other Canon products I am not aware of? Not really looking for any "specialty" eyecups. Just a better OEM replacement really.

I guess gaffers tape is an option...

Thanks in advance!

Blake, the same thing happened to me way back when I was using the extender and resolved it by taking a tinny piece of toilet paper, fold it in half (about the size of a Q-tip) and wedge it onto the edge of the contact point on the camera, then slide in the extender. If it stays tight, you are good to go. If not, repeat the process. I swithed camera and did that a couple times and it worked.

Maybe I will try that with the extender+eyecup. But the one that I lost wasn't the one with the extender. It was just attached to the camera and fell off because it was loose. Are all of Canon's eyecups just loose from the factory?

Not all of them. I never have that problem with xti, xsi 40d x2, 50d x2, 60d, 70d, 6d, 5d2, 5d3. Only with extender. I am sure the same method work for the oem eyecup as well.

I just wish they had a better design than the weak plastic clamp. A metal bracket little sliding latch would be MUCH better.

I use hot glue. Easy to take off and doesn't leave any marks. Mine got a bit loose after some time.

If it is most people problem then I am sure Canon will listen and spend the $$$ to improve it. Otherwise, why would they spend the $$$ to fix something that is not broken and no to little complaint from the consumers. IMO, you just have bad luck with yours and/or could be because you handle your gear a bit different than others, maybe. :)

Blake,

I've been using extenders since I started with a DSLR and I had the same issue. Some time back, Jake (CyberDyneSystems) recommended a Think Tank eye piece.... they make them to work with the rain covers they sell.

They are expensive.... $35, but they Never come off. They don't have optics in them so you don't have to take those plastic pieces of ummmmm "lens" out like you do with the Canon.

Here's the link for the one for the 70D: www.amazon.com/Think-Tank-Photo-6432-EP-10/dp/B00F33G062/ (external link)

B&H also sells them... as well as Adorama. So your preferred photo shop will have them.

That looks awesome! Is that an extender AND replaces the original eyecup so you don't need to attach the Canon eyecup to it?

THAT's what I've been looking for! Thanks! $35 seems worth it to me then! Especially since the Canon extender + eyecup is $24

Careful. It also takes your eye away from the viewfinder image. You won't be able to easily see the corners of the frame. That might be a problem in composition. I've thrown out my extenders and went back to the OEM eyepieces. Your nose smears the LED? That's one reason God invented lens cloths.

Take a piece of gaffer's tape which is thick, (unlike duct tape which is thin and whose adhesive can come off on the camera) amd stick it onto the inside on each side of the OEM plastic. This will take up the space behind the eyepiece and give you some friction to prevent slipping.

I like using the extenders. brings the eyepiece to my eye and makes it more comfortable. I just ordered the previously suggested extender to use w my 70d but i will try the gaffers suggestion with the SL1. I like to keep the SL1 compact

I had mine fall off, so I used a dab of clear RTV silicone sealer as an adhesive applied with a small tooth pick. Works great, so put some on all my extenders, no problems what soever.

That would work well.
