There are more than likely over 800 million posts about this on here already but I've just began to explore this stuff and I am wondering if i am missing anything in my set current setup

First & second priority set to focus
Slow continuous is set to 5 fps and that is my default drive mode
Usually on center point AF

* set to toggle one shot focus and AI servo
AF-ON set same as * but it also activates the center zone and case 6

Any tweaks missing? Is this a reasonable configuration to quickly move to different shooting situations. Thanks

Rod

Thanks. This was posted elsewhere and I did look at it again. More than anything it is a condensed version of the manual with suggestions along the way. As someone else suggested in a thread here somewhere: make changes in little steps. That is my plan. Over time I'll try each of the cases to find my best fit then maybe try tweaking that one. I don't want to make 15 changes then have to try and figure out which change is causing a problem.

I posted the link http://blog.dojoklo.com …ith-recommended-settings/ (external link) earlier in response to someone question about the 7DII settings. When you get there scroll down because you can have the information in an Excel spreadsheet form or a PDF file. If nothing else, just reviewing the information which is very extensive will get the thought process cranked up.

Thanks. Don't think I've seen that one before. Had a quick look at the PDF on my tablet. I'll have to go back on a real computer and download the spreadsheet for review.

Nothing wrong with Focus for those two but there is nothing wrong with the factory settings of Equal. The 1DX is a more responsive camera but both the manuals for the 1DX and 7D2 are word for word regarding that.

Here are a 1DX sport shooters set up. 1st and 2nd is about ½ ways down just below the case numbers. What he says about the AF focus on the 1DX - I would say the same for the 7D2.

http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/2678 (external link)

Only time continuous shooting can be an issue is when shooting high speed at 10 PFS. Read the warnings on page 142 of the manual.

I set my 7D2 so AI Servo activates when I press the AF-ON button. I set the * button so AI Servo, 65 point zone and case 6 activates. My AF-ON is for controlled shooting where I have time to set up. The * is for emergency shooting.

The only small issue is Canon did not add drive mode to those custom options. I'm old school and still like the shutter button when I shoot one shot. Actually I just started to use the back button focus this year. I never has issues with the shutter because after years of using it and keeping it half pressed to keep tracking was easy and natural. Since drive mode is not there I leave the cam on High Speed Continuous and I usually get 2 or 3 frames when on one shot. A minor annoyance but I hope Canon will add it if we ever get another FW update.

Neither in the 1DX. But with the 1DX it's at least possible to set the two options up in different custom modes, C1, C2 etc., and then switch between them just by pressing the M-Fn buttons. No other EOS model allows that, though.

Outside of having set my AF-ON button and * the reverse of what you have done then what I have should work. I only select the 25 point center zone because that is all that is active once the tamron passes 400mm or so.

That should work well.

My 7D2 is on the FedEx truck for delivery today!!
I see the last post here is close to a year old.

I was wondering if there were any new custom settings discoveries or changes made possible by FW upgrades that have come out in the last year?

Also what case numbers and tweaks to them if any are you all having better results with?
If you could, list the subject, case type, tweak, and any comments.

Thanks for your help!

below is a series of video explanation on the AF settings for 7D mark II by Wildlife Photographer Grant Atkinson.
Hope it helps!

Part 5/5: AF Cases
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtGMw-2VD1U (external link)

For me, I uses
AI First Image Priority : Release
AI Second Priority : Focus
AF-ON for AI Servo and * for Single Shot
Shutter Button : Metering Start
Multi-controller : Direct AF Point Selection
Multi-controller > INFO > Direct Select On Press : Switch to Center AF point

I don't use the case and edit the AI settings (Tracking sensitivity”, “Acceleration/deceleration tracking” and “AF point auto switching”) on the fly (added to custom tab). Varying the parameters will give you the 6 cases as stored.

you can use it as reference for your own setup(sports/action/wildlife).
Have fun!

Have fun!
I too encounter problems when I was playing with the settings.

after reading the Canon AF guidebook and settings from all the experts out here and there. I start to figure a way to suit my style.

Hope your setup suits your shooting style! :D

Is there a way to include a drive mode change with the back button customization?

No. I have been complaining about that here and every other forum including Canon Forums hoping Canon hears about it. I would be sweat if they added it.
