Got the new camera out for some real life shooting in the field to try the "BBF on steroids". I gave up on two BBF buttons (AF-ON & *). My gloves don't allow me to find the * button easily. The AF-ON is easy with them on. I just set up separate customs for BIF and my low to normal light wildlife photography mode. I can switch the mode dial from C1 to C3 easier and as fast as changing the drive setting with gloves on.

It was so neat seeing the focus indicators dancing on the kingfisher as it was maintaining focus after locking on. My old 60D (no MFA and 9 focus points, one center cross type) will probably not see the light of day until it is sold.

With my 60D for deer images (seldom appearing in good light) I had to keep the ISO 200-400 to keep the noise down. That demanded a slow shutter and suffered motion blur very much. I had to wait for the deer to pause as best I could. On the new camera my C1 is set for multi silent ONE SHOT with lowest speed starting a 30 and highest ISO of 4000 (to start with). Will have to play with a higher lowest speed setting to suffer less motion blur if a higher ISO can give acceptable noise. That was a lot of my reason for upgrading. One of my deer images has paid for the new camera. Hopefully more good images will allow me to add some good glass (100-400mm L II + a 1.4TC III) to get more reach.

I will always pick noise over blur. You can fix noise. The 7D2's sensor is light hungry. If you get a good exposure noise can be easily cleaned up.

Had to do a reset to clear up some problems and I'm trying to fine tune my BIF custom setting C3. But I don't want any confusion produced as I had before by having the default AF mode at AI Servo while the AF-ON changed it to ONE-SHOT.
So far I have the default AF set to AI Servo, default shutter speed set to 1250 with a range of 1000 to 8000. The half press shutter button is still set for start metering and AF to get the magic tracking of Auto Selection:65 pt AF with Initial AF Point selected.

My question is: Is there any problem with setting the AF-ON button for AF also with the only detail setting of "AF start position" set at "Registered AF point" while the rest are --?
It seams to allow me to start/restart the tracking that I may be doing with the shutter button half pressed with my registered "Center plus 8 helpers". Would there be any issue if I press both the AF-ON while Half pressing the shutter button? Playing with it it doesn't seem to be a problem. The advantage I see is that I can use the AF-ON ("Center plus 8 helpers") to catch a hard to aquire bird then release it to allow the half pressed shutter button to resume tracking.
I thought I could use the manually chosen "Center plus 8 helpers" in stead of the single point on the half pressed shutter and let the tracking take over some other way but cant find another way.

Thanks for your help!

I have left my shutter button so AF start and metering are both active. I'm old school and I still like to use the shutter for static shots. I set up both AF-On and * BBF button so AI Servo kicks in and both are configured for additional custom settings.

Being old school I shot with the shutter ½ pressed in AI servo for years. I only started using the BBF when I got my 7D2. I may be inadvertently keeping the shutter ½ pressed when using the BBF and have not noticed any issues.

So far I have the default drive set to AI Servo...

You already have some confusion here. Servo AF and One Shot AF are not drive modes. They are AF modes. Drives modes are single shot versus continuous shooting.

The applicable settings for AF-ON button will override the trigger button, as long as you keep AF-ON pressed. The same goes for the * button.

Call Canon and ask them to add Drive Mode to the detail set :-)

That would be a good idea. As it is now, I can only add going from fast to insane.
