Any thoughts/opinions on the 50mm 1.8 STM? I have read that it is not very sharp wide open. Seems like a bargain for the price though.

Nonsense, it's very sharp wide open, and wicked sharp stopped down. Excellent lens. They fixed all the things that were bad about the old nifty, so the mount is metal, the lens hood attaches to the barrel instead of the element, and the STM focus motor is a nice improvement. It's decently quick to focus, accurate, works well in low light even, and pretty quiet to boot.

It's really good considering it's cost.

Grab one with confidence if you want a fast 50mm that is inexpensive and worth every little penny.

Every review I have read says it is at least as sharp as any other 50mm 1.8 wide open. Mine certainly is.

A perceived lack of sharpness at f/1.8 can sometimes be due to user error, or camera calibration error. (the narrow depth of field leaves no room for error)

What camera will you be using it on? I've found the foreground out of focus areas to be muddy and glowy (not subjectively attractive to me) on a full frame camera but it also depends on what you will be shooting.

Now that they have metal mounts, at that price, it's almost silly not to have one in your arsenal. Great lens.

its very sharp wide open. and probably the best bang for the buck you can get.
It outperforms my Sigma 50 1.4 wide open by a little.
Also the build quality is such a huge improvement over the previous version. If you want a 50 and want high quality optics and not spend alot you cant beat it

Very best,

Great lens for the price with a much nicer build than the previous version but while relatively quiet its still quite noisy for an STM lens

The 50 1.8 is a long standing contender for best bang for the buck prime. With the improvements in the STM version it seems to be an even better bargain now.

Given the better build, the better focus motor, the metal mount, 7 rounded instead of 5 aperture blades, and an excellent available hood, the new 50mm f/1.8 STM is an incredible bargain. Anything significantly better will cost 4 or 5 times as much.

Ditto. If I wreck mine and need a quick replacement, guess I can't go wrong with the STM version.

Heya,

Even if the 50 STM and the older MKI & MKII 50's were identical in every way, I would still replace them for the 50 STM for one simple reason: the hood is on the barrel, not the element. The rest is just icing on the cake. But that simple build change is a big deal actually if you care about buying a throw-away-priced-lens and want to get the most out of it. Way more likely to survive the bumps of life.

Very best,
