I need at least a 5 second exposure. Trying to use sparklers to trace around a couple and have them be back lit at the end of the exposure.

Sample photo, but with first curtain:

First or second curtain flash would make no difference in that photo. None. At all. In fact, any flash at all would have properly exposed the person carrying the sparkler. My guess is there is NO flash in that photo.

Flash went off at the beginning of the exposure. Flash was placed on the floor behind the two subjects. If you look at the woman's leg, you can see it lighting her thighs. I probably should've put the flash further more behind them. I was going for this type of look:

**with the sparklers tho.

Again, first or second curtain makes no difference in the photos you linked to. None. My guess is not one photo on that page was made with second curtain flash. If it was, it wasn't needed. You are chasing the wrong bus here.

The entire point of second-curtain flash is to put the 'trail' of a moving object behind it. In order for second curtain to make any sense, you have to be shooting a moving object. Please, google "second curtain flash images".

Firstly, that image doesn't require 2nd curtain sync, it'll make no difference to the light balance (most people think it does). 2nd curtain is only really required where you want to leave a light trail 'behind' a moving subject.

Secondly, as above, keep wireless 'off' in the camera menus, the camera treats the transmitter as an on camera flash and has no idea what it's really doing.

You can't have that 'with the sparklers' because the sparklers light your couple too, over riding the rimlight effect.

You might get close if you keep the sparklers to the rear of the couple and not too far off to the side.
