I am giving some consideration to purchasing an extension tube/s for the above.
I already have the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens but at times I would like to get closer to the subject.
Does anyone here incorporate both when shooting macro or offer some advise please!

I just bought a set of Kenko extension tubes. Invaluable when doing snowflake photography:

I got good results with them on my 5DII as you can see, but on the cropped sensor camera the photos sucked (although your mileage may vary, as there were other factors, like a clear protection filter on the lens, as well as possibly diffraction).

Canon also has a couple of extension tubes: EF 12mm and EF 25mm (look for version II of these), and I was originally considering getting these. They're more expensive than Kenko's, though. I'd recommend the Kenko: they have contacts for the ETTL system and have metal mounts. Stay away from ewwBay knock offs, as these might not have pass-through for the ETTL/autofocus and/or have cheap plastic mounts that one day detach and leave you with a viewfinder image of your valuable macro lens lying destroyed on the ground.

I have the Kenko's too. I find they work really well with my 100 macro. I also use off camera flash is nice with macro too.

Those snowflakes look awesome, I've gotta give that a try next time we have snow. Great job!

Yup, hand-held. I tried with a focusing rail, but I ended up with so-so shots and lumbar pain.
