Hey All;

Im thinking of taking my niece to do some street photography in NYC next Monday 12/28, its been like 20 years since Ive been there so I am a little lost on what I can do outside of the clear Touristy spots. Im coming from NH so I wanted to know if anyone has suggestions travel wise on where to go , interesting places and and maybe what's reachable in a day walking / Subway wise once we are in the City.

I am thinking of driving in really early in the AM but also not sure what the best central spot to park would be or is park and ride outside the city a better option?

We are only bringing one body / one glass each, don't want to be burdened by EQ.

any suggestions are much appreciated.

thx!

Carlos

I can't relate to NYC. I live near Chicago. Trips into the city by train are a lot easier than by car. Parking is expensive and driving in the city is a nightmare. I park about 50 miles out and take the train in. It is cheaper than driving/parking and I don't waste any daylight dealing with car issues.

Since two of you are going, take two cameras, with one lens on each. I'd take 17-40, or 24-105 - which ever your prefer, and something exceedingly wide. I have a Sigma 15mm FE and a Rokinon 12mm FE. One of them would be along for the ride.

I get to NYC once or twice a year. I like photographing in the lower east side. Always something interesting in Harlem too. Walking over the Brooklyn bridge has good opportunities and you can get some good skyline/bridge shots from the Brooklyn side. If you want to take a break from shooting the International Centre of Photography has a Steve McCurry exhibit going on. On the lower east side the tenement museum is a must see. They used to offer (probably still do) a walking tour of the lower east side which is a good way to familiarize yourself with the area and you can keep clicking while on the tour as well.
