What background color would best suit these orchid?

Black would render the stems invisible. My vote goes to light/medium blue, but less greenish than the current blue. Gray might also work.

i'd worry about the subject lighting and exposure before worrying about the background, but the current color could work with a different value and not being so inorganically solid.

Whatever color you pick shouldn't compete with the flower. This current color is screaming for attention, and it should let the orchid be the star of the show.

I like black. It makes the orchids stand out, and it doesn't compete with the flowers.

I just use my husbands old black Harley Davidson t-shirts draped over the edge of the couch.

The first one is a lot worst than the original -?

Just darken the background and may be after lighten the flower a bit depending the result
I would also slightly desaturate the background (i said slightly, do not make a selective color ;) )
and it should be better
