How does the 300 i is compare to the ii?

Sorry for thread hijack!

I tried my Mk1 against a friend's Mk2 and, as a bare lens, there really wasn't anything in it for me. I only had my 2 x Mk3 extender with me (so I couldn't try the 1.4) and whist there wasn't much difference the nod would have to go to the 300 Mk2. The AF was just a little snappier and the IQ marginally better. It wasn't enough for me to consider the newer lens at the time but the Mk2 is a bit cheaper now so?????

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

I owned ver 1, then sold it and upgraded to ver 2.

Ver 2 has a slight increase in IQ. But I would be hard pressed to tell the two apart.
I think the biggest advantage ver 2 has is with extenders. It retains great IQ and AF performance with the 1.4xIII.
Slight decrease in IQ and AF with the 2xIII, but still very good.

Ver 2 has more stops of IS. This helps me when shooting propeller aircraft in flight at slow shutter speeds to capture
prop blur. Ver 2 is a tad bit lighter in weight.

Getting back to the ver 2 + 2xIII...my keeper rate with this combo is less than with the 1.4xIII or the lens alone.
But that's shooting fast moving aircraft.

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.
