Other than shooting RAW and adjusting WB afterwards in whichever photo editing software, what methods for obtaining proper/consistant WB work best for you?

Assuming you are shooting JPEG for the sake of faster write speed/bigger buffer/less space on your hard drive, idealky you would want to capture your images as best as possible right out of the camera.

Stadium lighting presents all sorts of color temperature variables, especially if you are shooting in a field in the early evening with mixed lighting (stadium lights mixed with whats left of a sunset).

What method for obtaining WB works best for you?

Up front I'll note that I shoot RAW, so I can fix WB in post.

That said, I'm typically not keen on adjusting shots more than I have to. One simple precaution I've taken is that I've made a LR import setting that includes the correct WB for every local gym I've shot in as my kids play around the area. For sure I know the correct WB at our home gym and pool.

Photograph a white sheet of paper and use that to set a custom white balance.

I carry a little gray card with me, walk out onto the court/field before the game, shoot it and set a custom WB to it.

For the early evening times when the light is changing I go with AWB and adjust if necessary in post (I shoot RAW).

How does the Expodisc system work? I was looking at the product photo and read the description, but I'm not sure how it actually works. Do you point it at a light source?

Here is a short tutorial. As simple as clicking a picture from where your light source is.

Daylight pics, I just stick with Auto WB. Floodlight pics are awkward. Even though the light is 'consistent', floodlights cycle different colors. I don't bother that much, stick with AWB and tweak in PP.

Instead of a Expodisk, use two coffee filters and a rubber band in its place. Works great

I agree. Basketball season has just ended for me. Arenas in our area have decent lighting or are upgrading to lights with fewer WB issues. Our regional tournament was held in an arena that had the worst possible lights. There was a mix of sodium and metal halide fixtures. Those lights coupled with purple floor trim was horrible. I had to edit each photo individually in pp. New fixtures were installed this year and AWB worked great out of the camera.
