Hi. Not a bird ID expert myself, but the chicks were with dozens of adult Canada geese so I assumed that's what they were. They were quite big, too, and had been left to fend for themselves. Nothing much else around except a few gulls.
Terry...I miss ID stuff all the time, and hopefully get corrected for it. I'm certainly not an expert in bird ID, but I was a biology teacher, and went on many field trips with my kids, always having my bird book in hand. I learned a lot of them, however, there are soooo many that I miss ID or simply don't know.
The birds you saw did not have webbed feet, but rather lobes of skin on their toes that facilitate their swimming. Also, they had more pointed beaks (bills) than Canada geese chicks do.
