Going through old images and came across this photo of a Cackling Goose along side of a Canada Goose. Thought some here might find it interesting to see the size difference. Besides the smaller size, it's fairly easy to see the Cackling has a shorter bill, different head shape, shorter neck and a white collar at the base of the neck

Until 2004, the Cackling Goose was considered one species: Branta canadensis. Now, due mainly to genetic differences, the Cackling Goose is formally on its own, with four regional subspecies under its wing.

From today....A local Cape Barren Goose with its young

Beautiful. Lovely to see those little ones. Beautifully posed for you.

I didn't realise they were on the mainland.

Great shot, clipper. Very different from any geese we have here in the states.

Very nice shot Doc. I have a question for ya. The smaller goose has a white ring around it's neck which is very typical of Aleutian geese. Out here we get both cacklers and Aleutian geese quite often. Since the Aleutians are only slighter larger than the cacklers, is it possible that the smaller goose in your photo is an Aleutian goose?

Mike, I’m no expert on bird id’s and was going on what I was told by the local experts. Now after googling Cackling goose and Aleutian goose I read that the Aleutian is one of the four sub-species of the Cackling goose. Soooooo, with that said I guess it’s possible that this is an Aleutian. :-)

Doc...I'm certainly not an expert either, but I see so many of them, that I kinda thought that maybe it was an Aleutian Goose. Here is one that my dog Annie retrieved lasts hunting season. By the way they are excellent table fare for those who enjoy waterfowling.

Mike, kind of getting away from the subject of Best Bird Portrait but in reply to your comment about those that enjoy waterfowling. I’m in the heart of the Mississippi flyway but never did any goose hunting. Only ducks. I lived for duck hunting. Had to slow down and finally quit due to old age and failing health. Here’s a shot of guys coming in from a morning hunt in one of the public hunting areas close to home.
