It's what we know here, in the Netherlands, as one-day-old chicks (in Dutch: eendagskuikens). They're male offspring of chickens. They are regarded as useless as they can't lay eggs and their meat apparently is not fit for consumption and so they are killed by the millions. I am strongly against that. Wild Birds of Europe

Beekeeper Goldmember More info | I raise chickens and other fowl, and the birds that die of old age I try to put to some use. During winter I'll put them on a fence post for the Raptors if the weather is bad. Hatch year hawks have a rough time figuring things out, and winter can be really hard on them. Accipiters won't live more than a few days without food, and the occasional handout can save them if the weather is bad. Zach--C&C is welcome on my photos

MedicineMan4040 The Magic Johnson of Cameras More info | Sep 19, 2016 15:00 | #3119 Levina de Ruijter wrote in post #18132371 That's actually good advice, Jeff. That's a long story. Now this shot was taken during a harsh Winter. When that happens I go to the park with a truckload of food for the birds. But one bird I can't feed is the Grey Heron because they don't eat the stuff small birds and ducks eat. So when I was in the pet store to buy bird food I mentioned this and the lady of the shop said cheerfully: why don't you take a bag of one-day-old chicks. I was put in a dilemma. I am strongly against killing innocent little chicks for not being economically profitable. But the chicks in the freezer were already dead and they could save the lives of other birds. So I took a bag home with me, had it defrost over night in my bicycle shed and went to the park the next day. Needless to say the Herons loved them. I don't think I had ever seen so many Herons gathered in one spot. Of course I felt like a complete barbarian, throwing these now limp yellow little chicks unto the ice. And to make matters worse I was photographing the Herons eating them. Another thing I don't like to do: baiting wild birds. My excuse is that I didn't bait them for pics. I just hope that those one-day-old chicks did save some lives that day. Here's another pic from that event. Even though it was a rather dark day, light is still gorgeous because in a world where everything is white, that world becomes a huge reflector and evenly lights a bird. There are no shadows. It's the reason I love a Winter world so much! 10 star imagery !! flickr
