Driving the roads of George Bush Park this morning, after yesterday's rains, I found exactly what I was searching for. A Yellow-crowned Night Heron, hunting for crayfish in the roadside ditch. He was so intent on his search that he ignored me completely. This is closer to this sort of behavior than I have ever been, about 15 meters. A slow and quiet SUV can make an effective blind. Always turn the engine off before taking any photos. These are very slightly cropped:
