Thank you very much Shalu.
In this photo, I believe you are correct. It surely does look more like a crow. As far as the snake is concerned, I do not believe it is a venomous snake. The only ones we have in California are the several varieties of rattlesnakes. From what I can gather from your photos, this snake does not appear to be a rattlesnake...more likely a gopher snake. Looking closely at the snake in this photo, the head is not diamond shaped like a rattler (viper), and the tail is pointed with no rattles.

Thank you for the information, Mike!

Great shot, Shalu. The yellow flowers add a nice touch.

I don't really know the physical characteristics that differentiate the two species, but for me personally, it's the location (Chipping Sparrows are not usually found in this area, while Swamp Sparrows are abundant), as well as the size (Chippings are very tiny while Swamps are fairly large in comparison). I saw Chippings when I was in Manitoba and couldn't believe how tiny they were! :-)

Hi All..

I’m very happy to have one of my photographs appear on the cover of the Netherlands Ornithologists’ Union’s latest edition. It features my photograph of a Cactus Wren. Ardea – the journal’s title – is a peer reviewed scientific journal and the official publication of the Netherlands Ornithologists' Union, having been published by that body since 1912. Below is an image of the journal cover followed by my original photograph.

Thanks
Tom
