Is that a Merlin? Just doesn't quite look kestrel-like. Matters not, great little raptor you brought home.

The only other thing it may be is a prairie falcon? I am not sure either, but it looked way too big for a kestrel.

Hi Robert...

Thanks for the comments. This species is actually native to Africa, but several decades ago a group of them that had been imported to the Phoenix area escaped or were purposely released. Over the years they have multiplied quite rapidly and can often be found throughout the Phoenix area where the climate apparently is similar to their native habitat. They are beautiful birds, and a group of 8-10 have taken up residence for the past several years in some Saguaros and Palo Verde trees near my home in northeast Scottsdale.
