Note: the EXIF info for my recent images shows "Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS". I'm actually shooting an FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS lens. The POTN gear database needs to be updated.

Male Stonechat sitting on the Kingfisher Post. This is my favourite post. It is by a river. It attracts so many different birds. Just sit and wait (2 degrees this morning)for 10-15 minutes something always turns up on it. Today it was a Male & Female Stone chat, a Wren, a Thrush, Kingfisher and a Starling also a Black Headed Gull. Just waiting for the Short Eared Owls to show. I will be there waiting what-ever the weather.;-)a

The Kingfisher was not happy to see the Gull on his Post, as soon as the gull flew off the Kingfisher landed. They kept taking turns each on the post. Eventually the Gull refused to budge.

For me this is a rare spectacle.

Today I watched the Kingfisher catch a small fish and then a large water beetle. After about 10 minutes he started to gag almost like choking and he then regurgitated a large pellet which he spat out. Having seen owls and other birds of prey do this I thought this was unusual for a Kingfisher.

I researched this and apparently this is a normal Kingfisher behaviour. He was simply bringing up the fish bones, scales and beetle shell all which he could not digest.

The article I read said that researchers have dissected the pellets to learn more about the birds’ diets. Curiously, the gastric juices of young Kingfishers are able to break down fish bones and scales, but as the birds age, they lose this ability.
