No you had it right, its a little blue heron. The tricolor has a bunch if white in its face at the bill, plus they are much larger in size.

We have amazing owls here, but we have only heard them hooting in the trees sometimes in the evening.

Always get these critters, the flying pine-cone dinosaur known as quail.
