This Barred Owl - for at least 6 years - has come to the same spot, of the same limb, of the same tree at the same time of day (around 1900) at the same time of the year (August +/-). Never see him near the house at any other time. I have grown so used to having him around that I nicknamed him - not very creatively! - Plato. ;-)a

Great shot Mike!

Thank you very much Mark!

Nice catch. What nut is that its holding? and How do they open that?

Thanks,Neal. It appears to be an almond nut, since there are a lot of almond orchards in this immediate area. When the almonds are shaken off the trees, the shaking and sweeping equipment frequently runs over many of them that are on the ground. Numerous birds species take advantage of these smashed almonds that are left in the dirt. This jay, being a young juvenile, decided to pick up one that had not been cracked open. He will definitely peck at it, but I'm not so sure he will be successful at cracking it open.

i've been home now for 26 days from open heart surgery, and i'm just able to lift my camera but i dare not carry it around yet.

i went to the ER because of shortness of breath, and they would not let me leave. scary stuff! after an angiogram, my mitral valve showed it needed repair, and also had a triple bypass. to top it off, the surgeon said i had a hole in my heart, which he repaired. apparently we're all born with this hole, but it's supposed to close while you're still an infant. so they cracked my chest, nipped and tucked, and sent me home 8 days later. what a strange detour in my life its been!

so bad news is you may be stuck with some slightly older pics from me for a while, so here you go.

Yep, already dark here and mornings now in the upper 40's.
