I've not seen a Pheasant here yet, although I'll admit I haven't checked every page.

I love this forum, though I never shoot birds myself...well, let's say maybe rarely. I have a question: why would mother nature give a bird such a bright red eye? I assume the bird is not completely drunk :)
Being a wild bird, the red stands out for predators' convenience. Just thinking loudly :) Thanks.

It's something many of us wonder about. I have the book "Bird coloration" by G. Hill. It talks in great detail about the role of color to camouflage, attract mates, identify, signal, and so on. I read the whole book and still can't tell you why the grebe's eyes are red. There really is no general answer. Look at the variance of eye color in owls. Some are dark, some bright yellow. Why? Don't know.

Did a tour of the Wakulla River, just south of Tallahassee, FL.

I was severely outgunned on my tour by multiple people with Nikon D500/200-400mm, Canon 7Dii/100-400 and someone else even had what looked to be a Sony a77/18-135mm just to make me feel like I wasn't surrounded. LOL.

But seriously, this tour was fantastic and just an hour long. The guide was very knowledgeable, trying to help birding noobs like me identify different species of birds. If you are ever in the area, it is a cheap and easy way to get out in some swampy-type areas without getting dirty and without devoting a ton of time.

QUOTED IMAGE

Oh wow! Even seeing a Goshawk is difficult enough (in the UK at least), but to get a shot like that...

A really Great shot.....It's good to see the 28-300L being used, I owned one for 3+ years and alway had such pleasing images using it. A very versatile lens. I only sold it because the tightening ring kept coming loose causing the lens to creep. After 2 repairs during my ownership, it put me off when it needed a repair for the 3rd time.

Would be nice to see Canon bring out a Version 2 model.

Thank you. I don't use mine often enough :( It is the best truly super zoom I've ever used. Liking it so much has me always
wondering about the 70-300 DO that never gets good reviews if I remember right.
I do think the 28-300mm is a great all around travel lens and did take it to Utah once.
