Great shot Mike. I love Wood ducks they are so pretty next to Mandarin ducks imo.

Great shot.
I also have found it pretty challenging to shoot this species. It fuzzies around really fast, non-stop.

Great capture, Mark!

Beautiful bird...great shot, Peter!

Gorgeous shot of a gorgeous bird Peter. We have relatively low numbers in the SW UK but we do see them. They're too far away to travel for while we're in lockdown though so I've not been out to see them yet this winter.

I am so lucky to see one here in the US (PACIFIC NW). Hope this lockdown will end soon for all of us.

BEAUTY...i am happy when i get to see one, and that is rare, i'd die to see a pair like this

Thanks for your comment, Brian. In my neck of the woods I see woodies fairly often. I have the kings and the San Joaquin rivers fairly close to where I live. I frequent them; plus a park that is right along the river. These areas have good numbers of wood ducks most of the year.

I see many species of birds that others post here on the forums, and I never (or hardly ever) get the chance to get decent shots of them. A perfect example are owls. I only have a small handful of great horned owl images, but I've never been able to capture any other owls. It's frustrating. :-(

Great match up of the heads of both those males......color explosion!!

Ed...I was pleased to see the match up of their heads, but it was nothing but dumb luck. I do frequently use a duck call to gain their attention and get them to look at me, plus I can sometimes get ducks in flight to turn and come towards me; thus allowing the chance for some BIF shots.

Many thanks, Peter. I agree...wood ducks are right next to mandarin ducks on the "pretty list."

African Hoopoe
Yala National Park, Sri Lanka
25th December 2020 at 3pm local time

Exposure CWA +1 stop
Shadows lifted +30 in Lightroom

Edited to add that the Hoopoe was initially looking away from me so I took one shot, using the clatter of the mirror and shutter to get the bird's attention and then followed up with the second after a further split second to move the focus point over the eye (no eye recognition on a 5D IV ;-)a). For composition I got lucky that it looked left, not right.
