Shot at the Muriwai Gannet Colony, just outside Auckland City.
The colouring of the gannets in this area is apparently enhanced by minerals leached into the food chain by erosive material from Mt Taranaki, a dormant volcano about 250km south of the colony on the coast. The beaches along this area are actually made from Titanomagnetite – s fairly soft compound made from a mixture of titanium and iron. Being black, the beaches can get very hot to walk on in the summer.

The Well-Read Gannet:

Apparently gannets are quite literate, as demonstrated by this one, intent on browsing a brochure on the colony - maybe new to the neighbourhood? Interestingly, the page covers how visitors should behave while at the site, and in particular there is an entry about taking your rubbish with you, something the human who discarded it obviously had difficulty understanding.

Not to mention the Durex wrapper just to the bird's right - perhaps gannets are practising population control now!

While one can praise the literacy level of the bird, sadly one cannot say "there are no flies on him!"
