The trick with extenders is to double ensure your lens is stable-meaning tripod/monopod and a hand near the
end of your lens to dampen any vibration
. When I started this technique my "savers" improved drastically

I have never done that. Thanks for the tip. I will try that the next time.

There's an awful lot of yellow around here. The sun has been replaced by rain... once again

I hear your logic Terry... and do believe your on the right track but I'm not talking about stability control.. God knows I'm all about motion blur. I'm more talking about the lack of image quality when used with the 100-400mm II.. Now I maybe nit-picking but the noise generated by taking this lens into the f8-9 range in just ok light of which I shoot in year round just annoys the heck out of me in post. I may be asking for to much as I've been shooting this combo for 3 years come October, and I should have taken a deal offered to me by MM but I guess.
I should say as well I rarely use the tripod for 99% of my images. Only on rare occasions do I put myself on a tripod. when I compare 50,000 on and 50,000 images off I get more clean images shooting off hand while in a walking around or on my belly shoot compared to missed opportunity's on the tripod.

I was asked back a few pages about an image .... I'll post the hole image... this is a bird shot that pushed more guys into buying the 7DII than you can shake a stick at. here and elsewhere. its a couple hundred yards off hand using my new magic camera just made for me by Canon... lol ...shot June 13 2015

That look like an oil painting. Or maybe it should be one. Beautiful image.
