# Post your best Bird Portrait

Someone told me they are one of the few birds that can break terminal velocity... not sure if that's true or not, but I've seen 'em in the dive routine, it's pretty crazy!

Yes I often watch the dive routine and try to get a photo but being in a quarry the light is so very poor and I struggle to get a decent photo with them just flying. It's a real challenge. I often see them bringing in pigeon's hoping they will go to a ledge not to high up but they seem to have their favourite spots where they are partially concealed.

Not to be too much of a geek (though, I guess I am one by replying this way ) but by definition, that's not possible. The statement is internally inconsistent (see the definition, below).

Terminal velocity

Terminal velocity is the highest velocity attainable by an object as it falls through air. It occurs once the sum of the drag force (Fd) and buoyancy equals the downward force of gravity (FG) acting on the object. Since the net force on the object is zero, the object has zero acceleration.

I spent a good deal of time trying to get good flight shots of an African falcon species (can't recall the name) a few weeks back. Not easy!

Clearly the Peregrine simply has the highest terminal velocity of anything alive on the planet.

Any downward force in addition to gravity will result in a speed greater than terminal velocity.
