It has been extremely cold and windy up here the past week or so. Temps with the wind chill have been flirting around -40C. Yesterday, the sun finally came out in the afternoon and with the high winds, I figured that the Snows would be grounded. Even with her heavy markings, this young one was not easy to spot sitting in a clump of long grass out in a field. she gave herself away when she started preening. Sat with her until the light faded out. Feet, body and head was nice and warm. Still working on the hands. That clinking noise in the background were my fingers falling off, one by one :)

Radipole Lake in Weymouth also has Beardies. They are not very easy to see (are they ever?) but the best spot is the corner between the main path and the start of the second path to the Buddleia Loop (that's the one by the stone bridge), though I have also seen them on the left, just as you approach this corner. They don't show when it's windy though.

Thanks for that, Jack. We will check out Westhay Moor first, I think, and if we draw a blank, try Radipole. We've not been to either site, so could you and/or PCousins tell me if there is lots of walking needed from the carparks to get to the best places to look for this bird, please?

Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing the knowledge. This is a lake I was shooting and it was sunny. I should have increased the shutter speed as you all pointed out or the ISO. One simple thing I forgot in the excitement is to check the images in the field often and adjust.

Hopefully I am not spoiling too much here for others with my sub-standard pics, apologies.

There is so much quality and experience in this community. Sheer joy just looking at the pictures and the beautiful birds from all around the world.

Thank to All in The Forum:love:

Listening to the advice on this forum doing lots of shooting should get you up to speed!

I have put a circle where the car park is and another circle where the Bearded Tits are. This is about 200 yard walk. You can drive down Daggs Lane Drove to get even closer but it is a very pot holed lane not suitable for cars, a 4x4 will be fine. The birds move across the reeds and take the gravel off the boardwalk.. They get about 3 metres from you. You can get some great shots like below but ideally the best shots are when they show in the reeds and hopefully if you are lucky that they are not obstructed by reeds you will have a winner shot. Best time is Early morning. Regards Paul

That is a great help, PC, so thank you very much. I must admit that I am not an early morning sort of person, but if it means I might get a shot as good as yours, it will be worth sacrificing a couple of hours in bed! You suggested that autumn is the best time to see them, but I think that if we get a few sunny days strung together this month, we shall still give it a whirl.

If you are visiting the area..... RSPB Ham Wall is a must (2 miles away), I was there yesterday. I heard them but did not see them.
