AF is a bit slower of course but still pretty decent with (near) stationary subjects. It does need a fair bit of light of course, as you loose two stops. And if you loose focus, it will go to infinity and back. That's why birds in flight are a bit more challenging with this combo, even though that too can be done. To prove that, I took two quick shots of gulls just now. They're unprocessed, just resized and I added a bit of output sharpening. Lost some wing tips as they were too close.

Thanks Griz. Yes I'm a happy man being my age and can hand hold 800mm! The TC takes away some like they always do
but I'm not complaining.
