Go out early in the morning before light, or go out before sunset and watch for movement, if there is an owl around you should have a good possibility of seeing one's silhouette in a tree or atop a telephone pole. It's not always that easy, but that is a good way to see them.
If you do see one, now you know where they frequent, start looking for them, at some point and time you will more than likely see something, now whether or not you get a shot is another thing.

I wanted to see one for years after I started shooting digital, when I finally did, all of a sudden I saw the quite a bit, like the flood gates opened, well, a small flood gate...

Right now I know where several Barred Owls are and several Short-eared Owls, I haven't seen them but I know where they are, I keep watching, and hopefully I will get them.

Thank you for explaining all that randy, I am in the UK and often hear owls but never see tham, even around the house in a built up area, they sometimes make our dog sit up and listen.
