Go out early in the morning before light, or go out before sunset and watch for movement, if there is an owl around you should have a good possibility of seeing one's silhouette in a tree or atop a telephone pole. It's not always that easy, but that is a good way to see them.
If you do see one, now you know where they frequent, start looking for them, at some point and time you will more than likely see something, now whether or not you get a shot is another thing. :)
I wanted to see one for years after I started shooting digital, when I finally did, all of a sudden I saw the quite a bit, like the flood gates opened, well, a small flood gate... :)
Right now I know where several Barred Owls are and several Short-eared Owls, I haven't seen them but I know where they are, I keep watching, and hopefully I will get them. :)
Hopefully.

Randy

Thank you for explaining all that randy, I am in the UK and often hear owls but never see tham, even around the house in a built up area, they sometimes make our dog sit up and listen.

Thanks for your comments.
Snowy Owls are really special....you need to be in the cold areas to be lucky enough to see them.

But, all owls are special. Take a look on eBird and see if there are any in your area. They tend to be territorial, so if one has been seen recently, you may be in luck.

PM me if you want a hand with eBird.

Greg

Thanks greg much appreciated;-)a

I remember about 30 years ago (I'm 20 now!) :) I was at our lake cabin and I walked out while it was still dark one morning and walked to the edge of the water with trees all around me. I stood there and all of a sudden I saw movement and noticed a silhouette of a Great Horned Owl about 30 feet from me. He was in a dead tree in front of me and I had a good view of him eating a coot. I had hot coffee in my cup and I couldn't move for fear of scaring it, by the time it was all over I had cold coffee, I stayed still for literally about 20 minutes. Of course my nose itched like crazy and I couldn't scratch it, but that's half the fun. When it actually got light enough for me to actually see him/her, it took off over the water and dropped the coot on a small island, the water was down then and we were clearing some dead limbs from the water and I found that coot with his head eaten off. Nothing else was eaten, only a hole where his head had been, he may have been a serial killer. :)
I didn't get that good of a look since it was so dim, but I will never forget that feeling when I got to watch it eat and my nose itched.

Not a easy bird to find and this was a big bonus, This Common Potoo had a chick. Amazing bird. I find the name "common" funny because they are not common to find.
