Hey Folks;

So a friend of mine is up and selling all his gear and offered me his newish 6D at a very good price, body only. I upgraded some time ago to a 70D and overall haven't been loving it, no concrete stuff just doesn't feel like it jives with my 17-70 Sigma Lens, but it does go well with my 50MM

Anyone done a similar upgrade? I know I'll have to get rid of the sigma and buy some other lens for it ,but im thinking I could sell both 70D and Lens to finance that part. I mostly do Portraits and Landscape, not a lot of action shots, although soon my kids will be doing sports so might have to take that into consideration.

thx!

Carlos

I went from 2ti to a 6D and it was a revelation…especially portrait/landscape and especially low light. I also own a 70D which I purchased for sports…but the 6D quality was so much better I didn't end up using the 70D as much as I thought I would. In good light it was fine…but if it is really overcast or evening etc…Since then I have purchased a 7DII which I use for sports. I went out and shot in various places all day today and used just the 6D.

I recently upgraded from a 70D to a 6D. I am in the process of selling my EF-S lenses and 70D body as I don't think I will use them much. Things I like about the 70D that I don't have on the 6D are the AF system and the flip out touch screen. Things I like about the 6D is the higher quality feel the body has, the higher image quality with less noise at higher ISO settings. Overall I think I will be happier with the IQ of the 6D but I will miss the nicer AF system and the flip out touch screen.

I will also be happier once I sell the 70D body, Canon 10-22 lens, and my Sigma 35mm f/1.4 lens to offset the cost of the new equipment.

Let me know if you upgrade, I would be curious to hear your thoughts.

I have been very happy with my 6D, image quality is excellent.. I think for your intended purposes it would be a good upgrade.

ive got the same feeling that i'll be happier with the IQ , Ive barely used the flip screen except for a couple of Macro shots I dont think I'll miss it, I thought that outside of video the AF was better on the 6D

Also im pretty sure I could get him to part with the 24-105 F4 L USM, would that be a good buy used? I see them in amazon for around $1000-$600 im assuming theyre different USM version's? I'll do some more digging if its worth it.

I recently bought a 6D and since I were moving from my good old 60D, I could no longer use my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC as walkaround lens (on the 6d that is).
So I bought a used 24-105mm F/4L USM as a replacement. So far I have been extremely pleased with the 24-105mm. It seems to be even sharper than the Tammy and even though it is "only" f/4 compared to f/2.8, it really hasn't proven to be an issue yet.
It really complements the 6D.

My 24-105mm looks in mint condition, even though it were bought used, and YMMV on this point, but all in all I would say go for it.

Right, that's one more difference, the 70D video and Live View focus capabilities are better since it uses the Dual Pixel CMOS sensor. However, I don't shoot video very much so I forget how nice the 70D works for video.

I got a 6D+24-105 f/4 bundle but since I already have a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC so I don't need the Canon lens, I am selling my (new) 24-105 lens for $525. If your friend is willing to give you a good deal on both the body and lens, together they make a very nice combination.

I upgraded from my T2i to the 6D just like Luxx and loved the 6D for a long time paired with the 24-105 f/4. It's a great camera for landscapes and portraits like you're wanting. I only bought my 70D later for macro shots because I wanted my 100mm to act more like a 160mm and give me a larger depth of field due to the crop sensor. I'd suggest you keep both if you can afford to do it.

Regarding the 24-105 being $600 - $1000, go with the $600 white box. These are the lenses that originally came in a 6D kit that have been separated and selling separately, there is no difference between them except you don't get a retail canon 24-105 box.

For landscapes you'll also eventually want to consider picking up a UWA lens, the 17-40 is the way I'd go, you can generally find them used, in good condition, for $400 - $600. I went with the 16-35 f/4 and I wish I'd have just saved the money since most of my landscapes are around 20mm.

For portraits I can't recommend strongly enough the 50mm STM to start. It's the best valued lens in canon's lineup and extremely sharp. At 1.8 there is some noticeable vignetting, but Lightroom fixes it with lens correction.

I upgraded from a 40d to the 6D about eight months ago, and I'm very happy. I think the 6D is a great camera for your intended portrait and landscape uses. If you're doing macro, remember the 6D has wifi, so you can use a free app on your phone or tablet to shoot while viewing the LiveView image on your device instead of the camera. I've never had a flip out screen camera, but in my opinion using a remote phone to view is even better anyway. You can position the camera any way you need and still have easy access to the image and controls on your phone. I did not buy the 6D for the WiFi. I bought it mostly for better lowlight, and it has met my expectations. However, now that I've used the WiFi quite a bit, it's something I would really miss from other cameras.

When considering lenses, remember how your field of view will change with full frame. I had to sell my 17-55 because it wouldn't work on my 6D, but I discovered I use my 70-200 MUCH more now than I did with crop. I ended up going with a 35 f2 IS for a wider angle instead of a zoom to take even more advantage of being able to shoot in very low light with the camera and lens combo!

Is a 'very good price' far less than $1k?

I upgraded from the 17-40 to the 16-35 f4 and I am glad I did.. The 16-35 is sharper in the centre and MUCH sharper at the edges..
The 17-40 is OK if you are looking to save money but the 16-35 is a much better lens and has the advantage of IS as well.
Most of my landscapes with this lens tend to be shot at about 24mm..

Great info thx everyone, I'll most definitely lay take him up on the deal (and yes it's very close to 1100) I might keep the 70D for now but maybe I'll trade it up later for one of the other lenses mentioned. I do already own a 50mm so that I'll keep to use. Good thing I can use my batteries too!!

$1100 is to much for a used 6D.

Including the 24-105 lens? I'd thought that be good deal, the EQ is in mint condition he takes great care of it.
