Anyone ever take apart a lens? (in particular, a 24L II)

In short, last night I replaced a ripped weather seal gasket. 4 screws, tilted up metal plate (that holds the lens contacts), replaced gasket, put it back together. Nothing crazy, it was easy.

Would this operation result in misalignment and require a trip to Canon? I can't see this being the case, but I want to be sure.

Honestly, you've already done it. Shoot with it, and see how it is. If it works fine, fuggetaboutit. :D

That's exactly what I am doing right now! I'm just a worrier when it comes to adjusting things that are working perfectly fine; even though I might not have messed anything up, a small amount of doubt has been introduced, so now my mind is messing with me. So far it seems to be shooting consistently, but just want to see a 100% test confirmation!

You are fine as long as the mounting plate is seated the same way as before (i.e. the gasket didn't keep it from tightening all the way) if it did that then you would have issues. I've done extensive work on a 100-400 v1 and a 17-35 and they both work fine after all the surgery.

For next time, you might want to slide out the black fuzzy sleeve & remove the 2 screws that hold the contact piece so it becomes separate from the mounting plate because the wires are short and pulling it up with the contacts still attached can strain them (as they're soldered to a circuit board that is still screwed down). Also grab some JIS screwdrivers (4 pack) as it makes life with those tiny screws a whole lot easier.
