I,ve seen AA lithium batterys but their not recomended for Flashes because of their high internal resistance.. The batterys don't really like a big sudden current draw because they recover slowly from it compared to nimh...
I,ve got the energizer 2500 mah Nimh and I love them cheap and a great warranty.. i paid $27 for the charger and 4 AA. Nimh batteries are the best for a Flash and the higher the capacity the better but sometimes I,ll take a little less advertised current capacity for a good brand name.

I,m sure this has been posted here before. http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/BATTS/BATTS.HTM (external link)

Becareful with those rechargeable batteries if your doing consecutive shots!!! I have burned up (3) three 580 EX's with 2500 mah Nimh batteries. If you are doing a lot of consecutive flashes, the batteries get HOT quick. I contacted Canon regarding the problem and was told to use good quality AA's and use the battery pack CP-E2 with the rechargeables. I do alot of performing arts events and concerts. I pop off several shots is a consecutive manner - 3 or 4 at times. I now use regular Energizer AA's with the battery pack of (8) eight 2500 mah Nimh. I have set the 580 EX flash function # 7 to recycle from the battery pack. I seem to get about 400 flash with immediate recycle time and no heat from the batteries inside the flash body, just a little warmth from the battery pack. Something to consider depending on your shooting style & subjects.

Hi Tim, Lithium ion battery may not be rechargeable in cylindrical form. Just to mention that batery pack of my EOS 20D is lithium ion rechargable.

I normally do a shot, recompose model and then another shot. So I should be ok.

We're talking about AA speedlite batteries here, AFAIK you can't get rechargable LiIon batteries. Yes the BP-511 batteries are Lithium Ion, they're about the best battery technology around at the moment.

That was my mistake I said "I had seen rechargeable AA lithium batterys: when in fact they were just AA lithium non rechargeables.. I edited my post and removed the word rechargeable from in front of AA lithium batterys. :o
