A friend of mine asked me if I could shoot a few portraits of her, so here are a few we came up with. Thoughts?

I think the first one is pretty well over exposed. Second, the guitar body looks pretty hot and the shadows look hard. Any modifiers?

Agree, the first one is way overexposed, #2 is very nice though.

I think both are quite nice.
In number one, I think overexposing a touch helps soften the skin and draws my attention to her eyes.

I like #1 nothing looks to be blown out. #2 is also nice but #1 Getz my pick a I had to choose just one

#1 would be my pick if it were not overexposed and it didn't have that disturbing spot on the right side of the frame.

I like that #1 is over exposed a bit and shot from a high enough angle to catch all that light in her eyes.

I like the processing on #2 it has a cool vibe feel to it.

No1 gets my vote as well.
Maybe a little hot, but it works well for the skin, they eyes are lovely and keep my attention.
In No2, the catchlights suggest 2 lights, so I'm not sure how the shadows appear harsh

Both are great.

1 draws the viewer into eye contact. The high perspective gives her a more accesible and unintimidating look. The high key focuses on her beautiful eyes and facial expression.

2 puts her in her world, guitar and music making for a great subject portrait.

Both are excellent in my opinion!!

Thanks for all the feedback. Here was my thought process for each photo:

For 1 - I shot it overexposed and bumped it a little more in post. I really wanted the focus to be her eyes in the photo, and with the very shallow focus of the f/1.8, I felt the background details did not matter as much because they were so out of focus.

2- I shot this on a bridge with the leaves, because I wanted to give the appearance of outdoors, but still keep the focus on her and the guitar. I could have eased up a little with the vignette, but I like that it gives her a spotlight effect with the guitar. I also opened the aperture up so that I could have more of her and the guitar in focus, but still blur out the background.

Hendrix played his like that.

Yes he was lefty and played a right handed guitar upside down but he strung the guitar as if it was a left handed guitar.

So to be more accurate I should have said: guitar strings are upside down

Looks like a perfect setup for high key lighting. It may help to have more strobes laid out to even out the shadows.

In both photos, the strobe is too hot rendering the facial features a bit flat.

The shadow of the nose and lips cast is a bit disturbing.

Composition no. 1 works for me. Would have been perfect if the fingers were clasped together with her left hand holding over her right.

She looks great on camera and I'm sure we will see some outstanding shots soon.
