There are many great pictures out there - but every now and then I stumble over a picture that really hits me. Here's my latest:

A picture of an alligator peaking out of the water (here an example that I found in the net):

(originally National Geographic, Joe McNally)

The picture is blurry, way too cold, weak composition and underexposed - something I would have culled in the first pass. But on a double spread it is sensational and portraits a great mood of a mysterious animal. And there is my humbling moment where I realize the difference between a real artist that has a vision how a picture should impact the viewer -- and me.

Any similar key pictures that make/made a great impression on you as a photographer? Why?

I like that image. I've seen sharp, well exposed, etc, images of alligators similar to that which did not give me the same feeling.
I also like the last one here "Nightmare Cruise" with a happy ending. because illustrates something I was trying to capture, Saturday night on Woodward Ave in the '60s.

Seen this? Great Photographers on the Internet (external link)
