Hi all,
I have recently inhereted a Powermac G5 with specs below:
2x 2ghz G5 processors
2gb PC3200 DDR SDRAM
250gb platter SATA HDD
64mb ATI Radio 9600 Pro gpu
OSX 10.5 Leopard

I know it's pretty old but it runs fine and is surprisingly quiet.
Is there any point in installing lightroom / photoshop on this? what would you use it for? Would you upgrade it?

If you are happy with the speed, I see no reason to spend money on upgrades. Just enjoy it.
If you want to swap that HDD for a SSD, you may see faster read and write speeds, but I believe your USB ports are limited to 2.0

I think the sata is limited to the 1.5gbps speed.

Not tried installing any photo editing software so far....

The biggest problem you will run into is it becoming obsolescent because of OS software and compatibility. I wouldn't be surprised if 10.6 is the newest OS you can install and then you will have to find compatible editing software for that OS.

www.everymac.com (external link) will tell you what the most recent OS can be run on that machine. Just make sure you have exactly the right machine specd, there are a lot that look alike but are just a little different.

mine is a slightly different version as it has 8 slots for ram and a max of 8gb but i think lightroom 2 will run on it.

The water cooled G5s have an issue with the coolant leaking - and the aircolled ones have an issue too (i cant remember exactly what it is, faulty capacitors maybe)

Ours is sitting in the shed as it no longer works

Aircooled here so no worries about leaking :-) might just have to give lightroom a go on it.

I think its either faulty capacitors or a fan comm fault on the aircooled one (mine is the aircooled one too)

I remember that in the winters when I'd get to my cold office, I'd just turn on the PowerMac G5 and the room would be nice and toasty after half an hour. That chip was truly remarkable at dissipating heat!

if it's fan cooled, you'll hear the fans crank up to speed when it gets warmed up.
