Hello
I'm having a hard time to decide what's right. I got a 6D camera (got 2 earlier) and thinking of buying a 7d mk2 as a second camera there 6D don't shine. I bought a 120-300/2.8 lens some days ago and planned to use the new 7D on that as a good combo. But now I've been thinking. For the same price as the new 7d I can get a
- 17-40L
- 100 macro usm
- sigma 1.4x tcand a 1.4x converter
- 300 usd saving

It's nice though to have two bodies for different purposes better than two 6d cameras which also can be good. In the future I'll buy the 17-40 cause that lens I primarily will use as a landscape lens but it can also be used as a normal lens to 7d mkii If I will own it after this decision.

What should you've done?

I'd rather have a new lens but we might have different needs/wants.

Normally I'd say glass, however I notice that two of you lenses will be very useful on a fast shooting body like the 7D2. Ie they are more for wildlife/sports etc..)

So tough call.

I bought a cropper as a back up but I got a 7d for about $550. frankly, crop IQ sucks except in the best light so I mostly use my 5d3. but I don't believe in travelling without a back-up camera. the original 7d focusses about as well as my 5d3. sure I would have preferred the 7d2 but its a camera I would seldom use. another body to consider as a back-up would be 70d because it focusses as well as the original 7d

I'm in a similar position (except that I have a few more lenses than you, so fewer 'holes' in my lens lineup). I've given a lot of thought to adding a 7D2 to my 6D.

You need to think about what the 7D2 would add, and whether those additions are worthwhile. IMO, the primary reason to buy a 7D2 to complement your 6D is to take advantage of the sophisticated AF system. Secondary reasons would be reach (from the crop sensor) and fast frame rates.

I came to the conclusion that, unless I was going to be doing a lot of BIF or fast moving sports photography, then it wasn't worth it (to me) to buy a 7D2. I use my 6D for birds, wildlife and kids sports with adequate results. I expect that my keeper rate for those uses might be higher with a 7D2 (once I learnt how to properly use the AF system, of course!), but I get nice enough shots to keep me satisfied with the 6D.

Cheers, Damien

You're right. I love my 6d but now when I bought the 120-300 I feel that it will be a dream to have 480/2.8 lens. The tamron lens with 600 is for 6d. On every trip I do I make a movie from of the trip and 6d has good low light sensor for that but it doesn't have the smooth and nice af in movie mode. That's a big thing if I need to find some great features outside the photographing.

When it comes to lenses, it's always nice to have many lenses but the only lens I fell that I miss right now is a uwa lens like 17-40 and now during the winter I don't need it as much as I need it during spring and summertime. The 17-40 is always at a good price too.

It's one week to go, it's time to photograph sea eagles and a 7d mkii would be a dream to use if I compare to 6d which can catch bif with more practice though. 4.5 fps vs 10 fps, 1 cross-type af vs 65 cross-type af points.

So, maybe the 7d mkii can be a good deal to me. Not just because the af system and all the fps but also for the video capabilities and the time lapse function in the camera.

You could get a 7D, or 70D, instead...would still have money left over for a 17-40mm as well

I have had a body fail while on vacation, (actually I dropped it) so I will never be without a backup. It takes a long time to acquire all the gear you would like to own, but a second body would be a high priority for me.

I use a 70D for those occasions when the 6D AF seems insufficient, or when I want the extra reach. One of the great advantages of the 70D/6D combination is the similarity of controls. Plus, both have the same 'hand-feel', and used the same SD cards. Batteries too, but lots of cameras use LP-E6 batteries now.

The day began like any day. I thought and thought about all these different options. Then I saw a 17-40 for good price near my home. Everything ended up with me made the lens even cheaper when the hood was gone (and I had a similar home already). Never bought or seen such a good price for such a good lens. Complete with box and everything except the lens hood. We also saw that the lens code is that it is made in 2012.

My price: 280 USD

so what you are REALLY trying to say is... you can still afford a new body! Go with a 70D or 7DII...used or new...w/e you can afford. Either of those will compliment your 6D well.

Congrats on the new glass!

Maybe I will :) now I got a 17-40 (again) so now I can use it with 6D for landscape shots and for a upcoming 7D MKII (maybe) it will be a good normal to go lens.
One lens for two purposes :)

Like some others have suggested it is not always a good idea just to have one camera. I was thinking this recently but a full frame camera that offered the features that I wanted was fairly expensive (5D3) and having already blown the savings on a 1DX a while back it wasn't going to happen! However the price of the 7D2 has dropped a bit and the "Grey Import" ones are very good value so I went ahead and bought one! It is not going to have the low light capabilities of a full frame but it it is a fast responsive camera and it's fairly cheap for what it is (takes the same batteries as your 6D too!
I can't really tell you much about it in the field as we haven't had one decent day (or part of a day) for photography here since I bought it! I am cursed!!!!
I think the 7D2 would partner your 6D extremely well giving you the AF and speed when you need it and keeping the 6D for the areas where it shines such as landscapes, portraits, low light etc.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
