i always thought the saying was more 'eating for lunch'...like nikon is eating canon for lunch...is it really that bad to be fed lunch? i wouldn't mind that :)

either way, shouldn't we wait for someone to actually use the camera before claiming it smokes anything?

Clearly you have not been fed lunch at our cafe at work. I would not wish that on anyone. ;):)

I don't think the Nikon D5 is all that. My 3 year old 1DX's have the same frame rates, the same clustered focus points (although the D5 sports 153 of them although I've heard you can't use *all* 153 of them at the same time...you can use groups of them in zone mode) and not so sure I want to shoot anything at 3 million something ISO and *then* do the post work to clean up the mess. I don't shoot because I like using my index finger to click a rodent around on the desk vs. using it to click a shutter button. As far as 4k video goes. I use a 1DC (intro'd 2.5/3 years ago) that shoots HD, S35 both in a slew of speeds and compression modes and 4k without over heating till the cows come home - *with out limiting me to 3 minute snippits*. Do I think the 2mp increase is all that???

And I paid around 5900 USD for it with less than 5k clicks on a rated 400,000 click body. Essentially new.

"Ground breaking", "Smoking" as descriptors for the Nikon D5???

Not.

The nice thing here though is all this functionality is wrapped in one body than different bodies, and its' ISO and DR is still better than Canon's. I also like the ability to do radio control of flashes in body, instead of having to tie up my flash shoe with a YN622-TX that cannot accept a flash on top of it. The metering system sounds outstanding as well, and a rear touch screen, even if a bit crippled, is nice. Canon's touch screen on the SL1 is phenomenal and I wish the 7D2 had it. Guess we have to see what the street reviews are on this until we can really tell either way.

you're like the first person I've read that owns a 1Dc. That camera retailed for 12K, I'm sorry for anyone that purchased it new and took a massive loss on the item.

Well i will say this. Im gonna be one of the first guys to send in the credit card info on the 1Dx2 if its priced at $5999.00.....my 5D3's are getting up there on the counts

I just want to see canon make some steps in the right direction. Its a darn shame that some 1/2 arse company like Sony, that puts our crapola glass has a sensor thats kicking some serious Butt right now. Nikon found a way. I always felt canon was smarter than that.

Hoping for the best at this update. I dont think there is any way at this stage of the game that I could make a switch.

Long thread so I'll give a quick take:

There are some serious developments in progress that Canon seems to be slow to react against. The Exmor sensor for one, and much of the mirrorless market for two.

That said, these new Nikons are not "game changers". They are very nice packages, and one that indeed should elicit a competitive response from Canon. But overall they are just more of the same nice sensor in a nice dSLR. While the new D5 may do some things better than a D4 or D810, there are not entire ways of working enabled by the new D5 that simply could not be done before. That is what a "game changer" is.

And yeah.....it can be frustrating when your brand has cameras that seem to be uncompetitive in several categories. But Nikon sucked hard for a long, long time with their DX only CCD sensor approach and they survived. And if you see a camera you must have, buy it.

Finally.....if you think the 100-400L was a lousy lens, you are nuts. :p

I'm not sure why Canon skipped CES, but perhaps CP+ in February?

I never bank on anything claimed by CR, but they are claiming 1Dx2 RELEASE in April, which would mean announcement likely two months before.

Canon didn't skip CES entirely -- they announced consumer compact cameras, which makes sense, because CES is the Consumer Electronics Show. A $6000 pro-grade camera is not exactly consumer electronics, so they are probably waiting for a photography-specific show to showcase it.

nikon announced a $6K camera at the 'consumer' show...seems to still have a lot of people talking about it...at least a lot more than those talking about the powershots released by canon...

You are not giving enough credit to Sony. They have been in the semiconductor game for a long time and given that history, it is not surprising that they are doing well in the sensor business. They can also spread out R&D costs across the group as they make everything from CineAlta sensors that does 8K (32mp) at 60fps to smartphone camera sensors.

I am actually more surprised that Samsung isn't in the CMOS sensor game right now -- they have probably one of the world's most advanced fabricator processes alongside Intel and TSMC. They probably could make great sensors if they entered the market.

Well, a lot of people will be talking about the 1DX2 or the 5D4 whenever that is released too -- both of the flagships will get lots of coverage at photography related sites no matter when they are released.

However, I think Canon will get more coverage on general tech sites (The Verge, Engadget, etc...) because the writers won't be inundated with covering everything else going on at CES. For instance, on the home page of The Verge right now, there is one article about Nikon and its about the 360 degree action camera rather than the pro DSLRs they released.

I know, when the 1DC released at 11-12k USD...you had to be a dyed in the wool video guy tired of lugging around pro video rigs and just dying to be able to "Run and Gun" without a crew and a slew of add on gear. So the lure of 4k internal in a "small" package (in the stills world a 1d body is not "small" in the video world it sort of is) was I guess worth it.

But now with 4k displays dropping in price like rocks
And the eventual move to CFast which would mean more different format media which would be incompatible with my scads of CF cards
And wanting to put off the purchase of bigger/faster hard drives and CPU's and more and more RAM:

I started hunting for a 1DX that would do 4k internally with S35 modes at stupid crazy ISO's and had a damn headphone jack (why the hell anyone would even consider not designing/including a headphone jack to monitor audio on anything recording video is just friggin mind boggeling) thus ie a 1DC.
And it had to give me a focus proof still frame at 20x30 out of the video stream that was clean (if you are good at pushing, pulling focus this should work).
And it does; the resolution works at 4k. It takes a lot, a LOT of practice and you have to work with different settings and mind set vs. just stills shooting but it is possible.

While I loved the 1DX for weddings in crappy light. I absolutely hated the quiet (big time misnomer) mode that sounded like a train running down RR tracks. And guess what - the times when there was really crappy light was in churches - the exact time when the folks wanted to hear them selves say "I do" during the special moments. So the ability to pull stills out of a silent stream of no shutter clicking video killed two issues with one solution. At this point I don't know why more wedding shooters don't hunt for used 1DC's.

Then the only problem was finding one cheap and nearly virgin.

I suppose recently was the only time I've thanked Canon for screwing customers by dropping prices like crazy.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

To me what would make a Real game changer (what ever company made it) would consist of -

A pin point double cross type (star of david shape) center focus point active from f5.6 that locked on better than ever before.

A sensor that was so clean even with severe cropping upto say 800iso.

20Mp as i think this gives enough latitude with cropping without putting to much IQ reliance on the lens used.

A benchmark leader in DR and IQ.

well, cannon used to announce EOS bodies at CES,. like clockwork, nearly every year. They would altenate CES/photokina/CES/photokina and so one..

From what I am reading, apparently they don't anymore.
