Hooded Merganser male that was with a female and another male, the two males were chasing each other quite a bit, I assumed that they were fighting over the female, but really, now I feel as though they were just playing. The reason I think this is that I watched them for about 2 hours, they would attack each other, then swim beside each other immediately afterwards calmly, with the female fairly off in the distance. I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure they were just playing around, they also played 'motorboat' too, they would swim REALLY fast beside each other for maybe up to 50 feet. They did this over and over again also.

No, it's in Irving, but I know of someone that saw a few of them over by Sunset Bay the other day, I have never seen any at White Rock myself.

Thanks, Phil! :)

Well done Randy. Sounds like a breeding display you were watching. They will also stretch their necks while in display.

I watched them doing the breeding display too, bobbing heads and bumping with other birds, this didn't appear to be that, if I had to say, it was racing. heheh Whatever it was, it was very entertaining.
Thank you, John!
