Help please, when I try to set my "Register/recall" settings, assigned to the af-on button it does not seem to retain any of the settings. ANY tips or hints. Don!t think I,ve used this setting before. This is for my 7dmkii.

Each selected feature in the menu or submenu must be 'OK'ed before you exit the menu in question.
Have you read/consulted the users guide?

There is an excellent booklet in pdf format that explained the AF functions and how to set it for the 7DII - just Google: EOS_7D_Mark_II_AF-Setting_Guide-p9090-c3945-en_EU-1427891501 - and 'Save Target As' to your computer

Hope this helps.

Paul

ok,,just got it to stay registered in M , shutter sp ,av, and metering. Without hitting the register current settings button. Once I hit apply,,,it seems to unsave everything. Just dose not make sense to me.

Are you talking about setting values and functions by pressing the Q button?

Hi, page 338 illustrates the setting that CAN or CAN't be set through the quick button menu.
To be helpful, we need to know what functions you're trying to register ...

Paul

PS. also, please note the footnote on page 62

ok Paul,,,got this figured out. works ok,,just confusing. I thought when i made the changes to register/recall.....you then hit the bottom of the screen "register current settings" and then hit the following "apply" box. But what that does is simply reg the current setting on the camera,,,,,,,,not the ones you just applied in the reg/recall screen . that was and still is confusing why it would be set up that way,,,,but now that i see how it works,,,i can move forward with my settings i wanted to do. Thanks for your input.

Sounds to me like the OP is trying to register settings to the C1, C2, C3 knob settings. That is done in the menu system, not with the Q-button.

No, this is different. Its when you assign say the AF-ON button to Register/recall shooting function. page 457 of the manual, It shows the camera icon,,,you then push set and then the info button,,,,to give you a sub menu. From this you can make several setting adjustments that only apply to when you push the AF-ON button. So if you are in manual mode when you change the settings,,,it only applies to manual mode when you hit AF-ON. must repeat setting set up if you want it to work same way in C1,C2, AV, etc. It works great,,now that i understand it,,,,just don,t make these changes and then click on the bottom of the screen button to " register current settings" Confusing,,alittle.

Yes, that confused me for a moment too, the first time I saw it. But as you now have found out, the "register current settings" is a shortcut to store how part of the camera is currently set up, if you have experimented and found a good setup for some special task. Thus you can easily save that setting, and immediately recall/apply it by holding AF-ON, even if you since you stored it have changed the setup you normally use.

Like if you take photos of something happening in some specific arena, and part of that arena requires a different setup. As soon as the action moves to that part, just keep AF-ON pressed to handle it. When it leaves that special area, let go of the button.

It's a very handy function. Also note that there's a similar function that applies to AF settings only. That was on the 7D as well.

What you probably want to do is go to your Cx mode on the dial, and then make sure your CF setting says to auto apply changes. This way anything you do while in the Cx slot on the dial will be auto-registered. Once you have that mode dialed in exactly how you want, then go change the setting back forcing you to reregister your setttings.

I will set up a baseline and register it to C1, for example. However I am not sure until I am shooting the event in question whether the settings are perfect. I will go to C1 while at the event, continually tweak the settings all the while having them auto-registered to C1. Once I am happy, I will set the option to not auto-register.

This way if I still keep making changes, it will be for odd situations during the event, and I can simply move the dial and then set it back to C1 to get back to my previously assigned settings.

Not sure if this is what you are trying to do or not, at least this methodology works for me.
