Why not just delete the threads after the deal is done.

It allows people to see what the going prices are. If I'm going to list my 7D, I'd like to see what the last few have sold for.

It gives you a better overall understanding of the sales patterns for certain equipment and when they fluctuate in the marketplace. It's sorts of like the stock market: when some gear is "up" and some down; the best times to buy and sell.;-)a

Sure, but list price doesn't equal sales price. There are many sources available to find asking price. Some of these deals list are over a year old.
