Hi, I'm intrigued by these pix and I hope to make some constructive comment! Pix 1 and 3 are better in b&w. IMO railway tracks are better viewed disappearing into the distance, and I guess you are deliberately avoiding that, but I would still prefer some distance to the tracks. Why 1/2000 - it seems pretty stationary to me! With pic 2, I'd like to see this from the other end, ie looking down the tracks to the sleepers across the rails.

Tony,

Thank you for your c&c. I agree with you that the b&w look better, but am always interested in others' opinions. This is a short piece of abandoned track and I was just playing around with some different viewpoints. I do have some shots with the typical "vanishing tracks" and I'll post some of them when I get the chance to pp. As far as the shutter speed is concerned, quite honestly I was set in Av mode and had chosen f/2.8 for shallowest depth of field. At ISO 400, the camera picked 1/2000 and 1/1600. The day was pretty bright at the time. These tracks are very close to my home, and are on the way to my son's house so I pass them frequently. I'm sure I'll stop again, and I'll play around more with different exposures.

I agree with you about seeing #2 from the other end. Unfortunately, the background is then cluttered by a power equipment dealer. I might try to temporarily erect some type of neutral colored backdrop. Also, I'm going to try lying down lower the next time. As I said, the tracks are abandoned so I have no fear of oncoming trains ;-)a

Phil,

Duh me re the 1/2000. I should have figured that out myself! I like to learn from others' photos.

Cheers

I like the B&W better than the color. In the first image, I do not like the front focus being that far into the image. I think it distracts from the image. I would stop down to get the depth of focus range to include as much of the front portion as possible. Same issue with the third image. The second image, in my opinion is excellent.
