I think they'll sell a lot of these D500's.

not sure i could shoot through those 153 dots and squares, the crop sensor marker, and whatever that random bracket is on the outside of the viewfinder.

way too much going on in there.

Well if the viewfinder is anything similar to my Nikon D750 - you don't see all of those points and boxes. The only time an AF point illuminates is when I go into single point and move it around. When I go into group AF I get four boxes in a diamond pattern no dots. And when I go into Dynamic AF mode (D9, D21, etc) I see a single box in the center of the selected AF point with just the smaller dots surrounding.

Basically the viewfinder is pretty clean. I will guess that the Crop box marker is only there to help you visualize where the in camera crop mode boundary is. In my D750 the pictures in the manual look like that for illustration purposes. In the viewfinder it only shows me the boundary of where my AF points are within. I will guess the D5 and D500 would be similar where you will only see the very outside boundary of where the autofocus points lay.

This slide shows a visual example of what the viewfinder will look like on the D5 from my understanding http://www.dpreview.com …oundaries-of-dslr?slide=3 (external link) remove all the red dots and red squares and that is what you see - the light black lines are the boundaries of the af array and what you see other than the highlighted and chosen AF point within the boundaries.

Both of those cameras sounds fantastic and I hope Canon brings something equally capable to the market.

Why do you think all 153 focus points would be displayed all the time?

Although I doubt I would trade in my Canon 7D Mark II for the D500, I'd love to get access to one to see how it compares first hand.

Damn it. I thought I figured out I wanted the D810.

I attended the D5/D500 launch event Tuesday evening. Both cameras had lenses and it was ok to fool around with them for an extended time. They're both very nice, but I really like the D500 - size is perfect, viewfinder is very bright, they moved some buttons around (ISO was one I noticed) so it's much more accessible, LCD has pinch, scrub, swipe, zoom and text entry. I really like the way they implemented this, very easy to use. Snapbridge looks good, only need to pair it once. Auto focus is fantastic, works to -4EV. She said it would focus at what is called "nautical twilight" and it will lock focus on things you cannot see with your eye. They fed us, tasty sandwiches, coffee and palmier pastries and gave out very nice polo shirts and hats with the D5/D500 logo on them. At the beginning she asked how many in the group shot Canon - I was surprised to see about 4 hands go up. I chatted with one of the Canon shooters sitting beside me after the presentation was over he said "I'm switching" - don't know what the others thought.

My buddy started posting D500 files........25000 ISO.....Crapola......7D2 just took a giant leap backwards :p

The D5 is simply remarkable

As a canon shooter. really tickled the 1Dx2 is going to be as good as it is. But the D5 has it beat in the ISO department...No Doubt

and the 1Dx2 has the D5 beat in the AF Department... No Doubt

Everything I have read and Now see points to captain obvious. These updates are game changers for both MFG's followers. Canon finally gets a sensor with great Dynamic range, dark/shadow retention, usable ISO at 25000 on a body with the best AF system of the market. Nikon has a sensor that performs better with ISO ( probably a full stop ), has great dynamic range, the best dark/shadow retention on the market and has the 2nd best AF system on the market. Both MFG's have the best glass available to slap on these bodies to get the best optical performance we have ever seen to date. Its going to be very difficult from this release forward to jump around from body to body especially for professionals who are very much invested with the perspective line ups they use. Dont forget, we are talking body and glass investment only. Now factor in speedlights, OCF lighting investments and it makes it darn near impossible to switch around.

Thats my opinion and Im sticking to it;-)a

I don't know much about $6500 cameras, but did anyone mention the AF system on the D500?
