I posted this earlier, but when the Canon 7D Mark II first came out it failed to beat even the older, smaller Nikon D7200 (external link) in sensor quality ... the 7D2 just had faster FPS and AF.

Right from the get-go, when the 7DII first came out, it was rated 12th in sensor quality ... it just had fast FPS and new AF ... on a pale, weak sensor.

Now that the D7200's "big brother" has arrived, the new Nikon D500 beats the Canon 7DII in every conceivable way.

Which is what a new flagship entry ought to do 8-)

I am sorry but the 7D2 is a joke, a tremendous letdown. I actually left Canon when it came out with the 7D2, after waiting for years for a successor to my 7D.

I believe you are "oversensitive" because in your bones you it's the truth: camera is simply an under-achiever, where it matters, which is in its ability to render high-quality images. (Sure people have taken fine images with it, because of the light and the subject, but the camera simply excels at nothing, sensor-wise.)

Everything else about this camera is great: AF, build quality, FPS, etc. Yet it is a fool's errand, because at the end of the day everything you do, every shot you take, gets captured on the sub-par, pale, sickly sensor compared to the competition. Most of us Canon users "wanted" to like it; but no matter how you slice it, the Canon 7D2 was simply disappointing. Instead of being at the forefront of sensor technology, it was bringing up the rear, sensor-wise.

Don't believe me, take a look at the scores on 3 different websites compared to Nikon's older, smaller D7200.

In every way you want to rate the sensor of a camera, the Canon 7D2 can't even beat the elder, smaller Nikon D7200 ... so there is no way it will be of the stand up to the newer, more robust, more feature-rich D500 that has equal FPS, better autofocus, includes 4K, and stores everything on a state-of-the-art sensor, rather than an outdated, non-competitive sensor.

Denial isn't rebuttal, it is only denial. The Canon 7D2 was a highly-anticipated camera, that came out with some very cool features, but in omitting 4K video, and in capturing everything on an antiquated, sickly sensor compared to the competition, the camera was simply a disappointment. I was a loyal Canon owner for 8 years, but after that I switched Nikon.

Jack

+1

Oh how I tried with the 7D II but to no avail especially motorsport (superbikes in particular). Never as sharp as my original 7D. Another switching from Canon to Nikon as the D500 is far superior. Should be delivered tomorrow :-D

First show with the D500 was not as good as I had hoped. Of course I only had a few hours to practice with the new AF system before the show and no time to really tweak the settings, but most photos were less than sharp...to put it mildly. So far these are the only shots that I would consider good enough to publish. This is out of over 1000 shots. Will need more practice.

Did you calibrate your lenses to the D500?

Not yet. Received the camera the day before the event, so didn't have much time to get it set up. Was expecting, maybe hoping, for something similar to the D750's out-of-box performance which was spectacular.

I saw a youtube video saying something similar, that the tracking wasn't spot on out of the box, so he went through the manual and realized the calibration was important. Fortunately in another new Nikon development, the d500 has an automated lens calibration, I think it is holding down certain buttons for a few seconds.

Here is the video. Also since you're using a long lens I was thinking if any misalignment might be exaggerated.

The speaker only mentions the d5 but in the description it says d500 too. And apparently it was a different video that said the d500 focus was off before he calibrated the lenses but I'm not sure which one that was.

Just posted some additional photos taken with the D500 and Nikon 300mm PF lens. Earlier issues with the D500 have been overcome with a little practice. It is a truly awesome camera.

Great images David. What adjustments did you make?

Were you shooting with GRP focussing?
