Nikon's New D5 and D500 Push the Boundaries of DSLR

I could definitely see some fear around a potential future drop of the af screw drive motor. On the other hand, I think it may not be an issue for a long time. Looking through a couple of local stores today reminded me that there are plenty of small primes still on the shelf which are screw driven (e.g. 20/2.8 AF D) and even the venerable 80-200/2.8 AF D is still sold as a new item. I presume these are still in production rather than just really, really old stock.

On the Canon side I'm not sure I understand. They haven't threatened to render a series of EF lenses (or EOS bodies for that matter) obsolete with any major upgrades to my knowledge.

Or are you referring to all of the manufacturers setting a price for a lens or camera update that is in line with the release price of the superseded item?

By nonsense I'm talking about things like superficial redesign of lenses in particular and jacking the price up as much as 50%, just look at the examples from both Canon and Nikon. Both manufacturers provide free lenses to certain photogs ahead of the actual release and naturally these photogs get on this and other forums and sites and the story is always the same, the new and improved lens blows away the lens it replaced. The manufacturers have always employed this method but it has gotten really bad in the last few years playing to the same people who have to have the latest cell phone every six months.

In any event I've loaded up on several D300s/D7xxx bodies so I don't lose the GPS capability when I'm shooting for business. I don't need to shoot above ISO 1600 and 12-16 MP is just fine for my needs.

The Canon EF 70-200L f/2.8 II, as an example, has better features and IQ than the previous version. The new Canon 35mmL f/1.4L II is significantly better than its predecessor in a number of ways. I'm hard pressed to identify a single newer version of a Canon lens that is not an improvement in IQ, or auto focus, or build over an earlier version. Which lenses are you talking about?

I've owned the first versions of the lenses you mentioned and also the second version of the 70-200. So all of the photos people shot before those lenses hit the market were no good? Having owned the 35L I'm hard pressed to figure out how that lens could be improved. The last five years of gear releases have followed the same in the PC chip market and that is the law of diminishing returns. A lot of this is market hype and younger people that need the latest and greatest all the time. I'm not complaining, this latest round of releases has made previous bodies and lenses dirt cheap and I've been like a kid in a candy shop.

I'm a bit confused, you say you're a Canon shooter but you show a D4 and Nikon lenses in your gear list. Do you own the 35L II? Did you ever shoot with the 35L I?

I haven't said I was a Canon shooter in a few years now (though I still have a 40D in the cabinet which gets dragged out infrequently)
