I could definitely see some fear around a potential future drop of the af screw drive motor. On the other hand, I think it may not be an issue for a long time. Looking through a couple of local stores today reminded me that there are plenty of small primes still on the shelf which are screw driven (e.g. 20/2.8 AF D) and even the venerable 80-200/2.8 AF D is still sold as a new item. I presume these are still in production rather than just really, really old stock.
On the Canon side I'm not sure I understand. They haven't threatened to render a series of EF lenses (or EOS bodies for that matter) obsolete with any major upgrades to my knowledge.
Or are you referring to all of the manufacturers setting a price for a lens or camera update that is in line with the release price of the superseded item?
