Jan 09, 2016 03:30 | #2 Well you've certainly got an eye for composition. If there is anything I'd change, it would be the tiny distracting ripples in the water. But those are tiny details. Well done! Canon 5d, 60d, 17-40mm L, 30mm Art, 50mm, 85mm

bob_r Goldmember More info | Jan 09, 2016 12:12 | #5 This is just my opinion, but I find the image very imbalanced. Imbalance is not always a bad thing and often depends on the story you're trying to tell. Normally, when I see a twilight scene with a large body of water, I expect the scene to be very tranquil and that is not what I get from this image. The image is heavily weighted to the right and even though a sunset can help balance large objects on opposite sides of the image, this sunset appears to be below the horizon and can not do that. Perhaps if it had been shot just a little earlier, the sun would have been large enough to make more of an impact on the image. Also, if the small tree in the center had been placed to the left side of the image, it could have combined with the sunset to help balance the image, but being in the center, it contributed nothing to help add visual weight to the left side of the image. Canon 7D, 5D, 35L, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 135L, 200L, 10-22, 17-55, 70-300, 100-400L, 500D, 580EX(2).

I also agree that the image is unbalanced. I like the dichotomy of the old scraggly log to the young new tree. But a different crop with the small tree left of center I think would be better. Fuji XT-3, 18-55 F2-4, 10-24mm, 100-400mm.

I've played around with the crop, I lost some of the rocks in the foreground so I didn't crop to tight. Not sure if it makes a huge difference to the balance. Ill have to try and reshoot the scene the next time the tide, and sun is right. Image hosted by forum (769009) © clae81 [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. For people to really play around with the image they prefer to have the original RAW. Here's a drop box link to three different exposures if anybody's interested.

bob_r Goldmember More info | Jan 09, 2016 20:12 | #8 I like your last crop the best, although I think it could be cropped even more. I did a rather quick edit of your image and increased the colors of the sunset and cropped the image a little more. This makes the large limb on the right the main subject and it also acts as a leading line to guide the viewer to the smaller tree and the sunset. By cropping a little more out of the sky, it makes the sunset a little more prominent. Image hosted by forum (769029) © bob_r [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW.
