I just did my first engagement shoot. Odd to finally do one after having done more than a dozen weddings as a second shooter and a few of my own. I have about a dozen that I really like. I'm not sure if I want to throw another half dozen just to say i delivered more. Quality over quantity, right??

I deliver about 80 from an hour and a half shoot.

Ok thanks. Well I gave it a 2nd look through and there's a good 20 or so that are pretty good. I guess I'm being too picky as if every image needs to be award winning for an engagement shoot or something. Going though my wedding images I'm comfortable with 200-300 or so 'keepers' as a lot of them are just documenting the festivities.

I'd typically deliver around 20 - 30, but 10 is fine if the customer's happy.

How many did you tell the couple you'd deliver?

I don't do it for a living. So take this for what it's worth. But I have done engagement shoots, fund raisers, and weddings as favors. I have in my mind that my clients will begin to get irritated with me when going through 50 engagement shots where three of every pose are virtually redundant. I only give the best of the best. For an engagement shoot, 20 would be the sweet spot for me.

Why not shoot different poses instead.

i didnt. honestly I think half a dozen knock-your-socks off images would be good enough. But for $300(USD) I just want them to feel like they got [more than] what they paid for.

I would work that price into a package and get the wedding as well. We usually supply 10 to 20. They want them for save the dates or just to have to show friends or social media. A great deal is not necessary.

How did you take someones money without giving them an idea of the deliverables?

On that note we deliver 15 images, at least that's what our contract states. If the shoot goes great we deliver more and make an even happier client. Our engagement shoot is only 45min to an hour at the most.

They didn't ask.

I have gone through a few more times and my wife helped me determine that I was being too picky. Have about 30-40 good ones worth sending.

Typically 10-15, never delivered more than 20. They start getting redundant after that.

And there was no contract or agreement signed beforehand?

There was, but no specified number. Do you do that? With weddings too?
