I want to install this 802.11 ac Wi Fi
http://www.intel.co.uk …uetooth-desktop-brief.pdf (external link)
Apparently its up to 867 MB/s.

I think my wi fi Bt infinity mkII is up to 67 MB/s.

and will have one PCIe Gen2 x1 slot available, which I assume is up to 500MB/s

Am I right the card slot is fast enough? The instuctions just say one Standard PCIe slot? What is that is it a PCIe Gen 1 x1 slot? ( just a bit confused as I thpught they were only 250 MB/s . If so haow could they ever get up to 867 MB/s ?

I want ac as the iPhone 6s ( a c standard ) is faster than the iPad Air which is n standard .

Network speed is given in Mbps not MBps. 867 Mbps = 108.375 MBps, which you will never achieve in the real world. Wireless AC 867 can't even come close to saturating a PCIe Gen 1 x1 slot. Gigabit Ethernet has a max theoretical bandwidth of 125 MBps or half that of PCIe Gen 1 x1.

I don't think I'll ever be happy with wireless for anything but common internet browsing. I just finished wiring my office with Cat6 for Gigabit networking. You're spot on about wireless never reaching it's theoretical limit, that's what I'll never be happy with. Meanwhile, it's pretty easy to get within 10% of wired networking's theoretical limit provided that your drives are fast enough on either end of the pipe.

I got the Intel Dual-Band wireless on my new Dell laptop............... it is WAY faster back in the bedroom than my previous single band. It is twice as fast, reaching 45Mbs of my 60Mbs down speed. Happy camper here!

The speed you get will also depend on your wireless router. Wireless AC has been a mixed bag, not all speeds are supported by all routers and early routers came before the AC standard was finalized.

Hope it works, as its ordered.
In any event to run a cable from the lounge upstairs to the study would be really messy! SO not a lot of choice and as I don't game its just for email. And forum internet access so not crucial.

And the price for an 'n' version verses an 'AC' version was £14. SO worth a punt if its 2x as fast.

Off topic.
But I was setting up an additional wireless repeater on my parent Wifi.
I noticed the firmware on both the router and repeaters had updates available.
Not having problems but I figured why not update it.
Took 5 minutes total, and another 10 minutes for each to reboot and reconnect.

The speed is the same, but the stability is 3x better in their bedroom and office now.
Same devices, same 'range', same connection, only the firmware changed.

It's just something often overlooked even by me. Without spending a dollar.
Maybe this will help others improve their existing connections wirelessly.
