We think he's fading fast... 14 years old and dropping weight pretty quickly. Just looking for the "perfect" picture.

Any help? A bunch of different random one's in the gallery as well.

Thanks a ton!

Sorry to hear your friend is aging quickly. I just recently made a post somewhere on this forum regarding criteria for photo contests and what judges are looking for...essentially, part of my post literally said we shouldn't be chasing the "perfect picture". The perfect picture is the one you like best. With that said, I think this is a great image. I like the gray hairs and the fact that he isn't looking directly at you. If anything, I would crop a little closer and eliminate more of the top left corner.

This is tough.

I think the perfect picture will depend on the time and your mood in viewing it. My choices for departed pets are taken at prime of life in a location we enjoyed together. I do not want anything on the wall associated with that sad final trip to the vet. Others, of course, show at bit more emotional bravery.

I think the picture is very moving. Wish he was looking at the camera is my only critique. I love the coloring. So sorry about your buddy.

Which one best reflects his personality (to you)? That's the keeper . . .

Tough tough questions. We went from hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, trail running, etc, to retiring about 4 years ago.. I wasn't really taking my pictures back in the day, especially of any quality. Now he is a REALLY sweet sweet old dog who loves to sleep. My wife says all the pictures as of lately make him look sad. Who knows right.... I think (AND HOPE) I still have a couple more months to find the "perfect" picture...

My heart goes out to you!

I agree with maybe a a little too much space on upper left. If you have shots your happy with from all the different stages in life, a framed collage could showcase how perfect he is in every stage.

gotta get his feet in there, even if they are a bit covered by grass the crop is to close too his chest. Also you generally want his eyes looking into the frame, not out of it.

i like the one you have shown here though … processing wise.

tough to make make the call on old canine friends, hope you guys are able to find comfort when the time comes.

I'm okay without the feet, but I'd look to employ a different crop (without as much wasted negative space) and a boost in contrast.

Cheers,

Jeff

To me, just get a lot of shots of your friend. I recently asked friends for ideas for personal photo project ideas for the year. Unfortunately we recently found out one of our family pets has osteosarcoma. (Bone Cancer) So my project is gonna be documenting her life. She had her leg amputated yesterday and we hope to bring her home tomorrow. I am gonna try to help us remember her good days, and a few of the last days. We just want to be able to remember her. And for you, even if the images are not the perfect picture, I am betting eventually, you will just love having images to remember your buddy by.

Were you specifically looking for the faded look? The contrast is very low and you're not using the entire tonal range. Why all that empty space on the left? The rule of thirds should not be applied here. Apart from that, the critter is looking slightly camera right. So there should be more room on that side for him to look into. I adjusted levels for the tonal range and it revealed a slight magenta cast as well.

I would post a different version, but I see that image editing is not turned on and I can't find where it would be anyway. So I don't want to break any rules. The old site was quite specific about this. In any event, here's the tone histogram. The red arrows indicate where they should be moved in order to use the entire range in the image.
